Web Developer

Houghton Mifflin Harcourt - Remote - Full time

Houghton Mifflin Harcourt’s Channel Marketing team is looking for a front-end developer to help drive and implement user experience and interface enhancements as well as refine our front end for improved performance and accessibility. This role will also work to enable more flexible and scalable content management and authoring capabilities in CraftCMS. Though the position reports to the Director of Web Strategy & eCommerce within Marketing, it will function as a hybrid Marketing/IT role to ensure continuous alignment and partnership between the two organizations. Our ideal candidate is a curious, creative thinker with previous experience working in a headless CMS using Atomic Design methodology.


  • Collaborate with designers and UXers, marketing and product managers to develop and optimize web experiences.
  • Proactively look for improvements that can be made to optimize our website channel to drive leads and eCommerce revenue.
  • Our CMS is built on Craft and you will be creating scalable page templates and modules to leverage in our marketing programs.
  • Contribute to website development with a highly technical approach around analytics, SEO and content optimization, and delivery of quality traffic to the website.
  • Create attention-grabbing experiences by helping to identify emerging trends and working to implement them as appropriate across our marketing properties.
  • Efficiently manage development tasks and priorities.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Minimum of two years of professional web development experience.
  • Deep expertise and hands-on experience with Web Applications and programming languages such as HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, JQuery, PHP, Twig, TypeScript, Node.js and API's
  • Comfortable with JavaScript libraries (React, jQuery, Vue), JavaScript module loaders (Webpack), templating languages, Github.
  • Expert in deploying CMS systems
  • Familiarity with source control systems like GitHub
  • Familiarity in building high performance responsive websites.
  • Experience working in an agile environment.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Knowledge of Craft 3, Heroku, New Relic and Google Analytics
  • Strong experience working with A/B testing tools to analyze and optimize channels.
  • Data migration, transformation, and scripting experience
  • Ability to implement automated testing platforms and unit tests.
  • Knowledge of image authoring tools such as Photoshop
  • Experience using code versioning tools such as Git.
  • Bachelor’s degree or Equivalent Experience
