In 2008, Washington Yu Ying Public Charter School (Yu Ying) was founded by a small group of parents dedicated to establishing a world-class Chinese immersion school in the District of Columbia. Yu Ying was built on the belief that all D.C. children have the right to a quality education that opens doors to the future. OPPORTUNITY

The Executive Director will inherit a Blue-Ribbon award-winning, Tier 1 school with a longstanding and committed staff and a highly supportive Board with a track record of putting resources behind leadership to try forward-thinking, innovative ideas. The dynamic leader who will take this role will have the opportunity to drive growth, innovation, and to continue to grow Yu Ying’s commitment to equity and inclusion.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Leading the vision for Yu Ying’s success, including ensuring that its dual-language program, academic instruction, school culture, and climate, community engagement, and external partnerships are highly effective and closely aligned to the school’s mission and goals;
  • Managing senior staff and school leaders, acting not only as a supervisor but also as a coach and consensus builder, remaining deeply committed to the values of developing and bringing out the strengths of all of Yu Ying’s people while also holding them accountable for their goals and desired outcomes;
  • Setting high standards for student academic success and ensuring students have the academic, social, emotional, and other supports to succeed at Yu Ying;
  • Ensure a well-run, welcoming, and professional culture that includes comprehensive and thoughtful development and evaluation processes to help all staff reach goals and improve their performance;
  • Representing Yu Ying to the broader community, connecting personally with all stakeholders (for example students, staff, parents, and board members) and representing the school with external partners, policymakers, funders, and other supporters, demonstrating an exceptional and compelling articulation of Yu Ying’s work;
  • Leading fundraising/development efforts and partnering with the board and funders to secure and allocate the resources necessary to support Yu Ying’s growth;
  • Leading with an eye toward growth and what is required to sustain excellent results while scaling Yu Ying’s impact;
  • Overseeing a team that is charged with ensuring an operationally, financially sound, and well-managed school, including ensuring compliance with all local, state, and federal regulatory requirements for a public charter school and managing financial and programmatic oversight and compliance;
  • Engaging the Board collaboratively and productively, promoting rigorous discussion to solve key challenges in support of Yu Ying’s mission.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 10+ years demonstrated success as a school-based administrator, nonprofit executive, and/or senior manager in an education-focused organization; experience within an elementary school setting and/or leading a team of educators is preferred
  • Authentic interest in and/or demonstrated commitment to Yu Ying’s mission of inspiring and preparing young people to create a better world by challenging them to reach their full potential in a nurturing Chinese/English educational environment;
  • A passionate advocate for all students and families who has a commitment and the demonstrated ability to build a strong culture of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging at Yu Ying;
  • An exceptional relationship builder who can quickly gain the confidence of students, faculty/staff, parents, and the board; ability to solicit, elevate, understand, and value - either through personal experience or empathy - the perspective of a wide variety of stakeholders
  • A stellar communicator with exceptional written, oral, and visual communication skills and the ability to speak to, engage, and inspire diverse audiences and build consensus among stakeholders;
  • Familiar with fundraising/development initiatives and comfortable with building strong connections to individual donors, foundation leaders, and others in the philanthropic community;
  • Knowledgeable about the academic and social-emotional needs of students, especially those of different racial, linguistic, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds;
  • Demonstrated business, financial and entrepreneurial acumen; experience building and managing a budget; experience with facilities finance, lease negotiation, and navigating school compliance matters is a plus.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

This position offers a competitive salary range of $160,000 - $180,000 and robust benefits including medical, dental, and retirement. More details can be provided upon request.
