Vice President of Engineering

BetterLesson - Cambridge, Massachusetts or Remote - Full time

As the VP, Engineering, you will spend your days applying your technical leadership skills and experiences to improve our design, development, and delivery methods by mentoring and growing our engineering team.

You will work in deep partnership with product management, product design, learning design, and key business stakeholders to lead growth as we expand our offerings from synchronous services to asynchronous learning.

This role manages a growing team that currently consists of five engineers and will report to the SVP, Product.

You Will

  • Define and drive human capital strategy for the Engineering department including hiring, termination, promotion, performance, and rewards for direct reports;
  • Create a learning-focused professional development strategy for engineers and Agile product teams in collaboration with leads in Product Design;
  • Develop and implement a framework for evaluation of new and existing development by implementing best practices and feedback from stakeholders and users;
  • Partner with the Product team to offer expanded integrations to meet our users in the platforms and tools they use every day;
  • Lead and own major architectural decisions in partnership with the executive team; and
  • Travel 25% of the time.

  • An expert in modern web application development technologies including HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, React, Python, Flask, ElasticSearch, and Microservice Architecture (Queue, AWS Lambda);
  • Experienced with implementing and scaling Cloud technologies, including managing a scalable budget that can grow in tandem with the business;
  • Knowledgeable of Agile methodologies and Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC);
  • A confident communicator with the ability to vary your communication style and approach to meet the needs of various audiences;
  • A proven leader with a track record of delivering timely outcomes, not just outputs.

You Have

  • Demonstrated ability to think critically and strategically and to collaborate effectively at all levels;
  • 8 + years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 6 years with a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 3 years experience;
  • 4+ years as Senior Software Engineer, Principal Software Engineer, or Software Architect;
  • 3+ years of people management experience; and
  • 2+ years of budget management experience.
