 AppleTree is seeking a creative end-to-end UX/UI designer to join our mission to close the achievement gap before children enter kindergarten. No matter your role, your work will help AppleTree Institute improve the life trajectories for vulnerable three- and four-year olds.

The Every Child Ready (ECR) reform initiative is a comprehensive instructional model designed to support the individualized learning and development of young students, teachers, and leaders. Used in schools around DC, This instructional model is comprised of several components that help leaders and school leaders better understand what to teach, how to teach, and how to tell it’s working. A significant component of making ECR a reality in more schools is the development of an online platform that - that’s where you come in.

The ECR platform is an integrated teaching and learning platform including, but not limited to: online assessment of students and teacher quality, gradebook, learning management system, online curriculum, and reporting analytics. As our in-house UX/UI Designer you will play a pivotal role in shaping the platform that will be used by teachers and instructional leaders throughout the District and country as we scale. Our goal is not only to deliver, the ECR content to end-users, but make the experience delightful and intuitive for school leaders and teachers so they can spend their time on doing what they do best - teaching.

As our UX/UI Designer, you will be a key member of a growing team within AppleTree Institute that is continuously building new features and enhancements for the ECR platform. At a high-level, your primary role will be to translate business and functional user requirements into intuitive and engaging interfaces and interactions for teachers and school leaders. More specifically, this cross-functional UX/UI role will require you to utilize the full range of your UX, interface, and visual design skills. You will be responsible for conceiving and conducting user research, conducting usability tests and providing recommendations for solving usability problems, using data to make informed design decisions, creating wireframes and prototypes for web and mobile-responsive apps, and collaborating with the Product Manager and Engineering team to build a product that will change the lives of teachers and students across the country.

  • Iterate and execute the full spectrum of web UX/UI design: design requirements, design discussions, concept maturity, information architecture, wireframing, prototyping (lo- and hi-fidelity), and final design.
  • Keep the interface beautiful and easy to use - design elegant solutions to complex workflows and direct the visual appearance of new features and enhancements to the ECR platform.
  • Work with internal team in understanding user experience through focus groups, usage analytics, direct observation, and other methods.
  • Create a product style guideline and lead visual consistency.
  • Exceptionally effective communicator with design team, product management team, and software engineers both in-person and remotely.
  • Coordinate the implementation of those products with software engineers - hand-off designs and style guides, and offer continued insight throughout development


  • A portfolio displaying strong skills in UX design, user stories, and collaborative UI and workflow design.
  • Experience with user centered design principles and practices, web standards, typography and color, and web usability standards.
  • Proficiency in Photoshop, Illustrator, OmniGraffle, or other visual design and wireframing tools.
  • Expertise in UX software such as InVision, UXPin, Balsamiq, Framer.js, Quartz Composer.
  • Solution-oriented mindset with an ability to work quickly using an Agile UX approach to rapidly produce and iterate on deliverables.
  • Excellent communication skills and interpersonal skills.

Highly Preferred:

  • Experience and knowledge of the education space.
  • 3 - 5 years of experience on a design team.
  • Experience distilling and presenting data in an intuitive and clean way.
  • Ability to join team meetings 1-2x a week in-person in DC.
  • Ability to custom develop initial front-end application build out utilizing HTML, CSS. Familiarity with JavaScript, JQuery and Sass.
  • BS/MS in Human-Computer Interaction, Interaction Design or related programs.


Salary (hourly) commensurate with education and experience.
