OPPORTUNITY

At UP, everything we do is driven by data. The Director of Data will be the lead architect of our data strategy and analytics, from how we use data in the classroom and with families to how we set goals and how we hold ourselves accountable to results.

The Director of Data will manage a team of two Managers of Analytics and will work closely with the UP Education Network Leadership Team, UP’s Principals and academic leadership at UP’s five schools, and with heavy data users across UP’s staff. This role manages external partnerships such as at Boston Public Schools, Lawrence Public Schools, and the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. The role reports to UP’s Chief Financial Officer.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Key Responsibilities of the Director of Data include:

  • Set the strategic direction for how UP uses data across our organization
  • Partner with the Chief Academic Officer and principals to create data analysis routines and action plans, and build the reporting tools to enable this analysis
  • Collaborate with the CEO to produce and present board materials
  • Develop and track key performance indicators across the organization to monitor performance and track strategic goals
  • Build reporting tools to support efficient and accurate analysis of academic and nonacademic data
  • Manage two data analysts and oversee our data architecture

QUALIFICATIONS

In order to fulfill these responsibilities, the ideal Director of Data candidate will be:

  • An accomplished leader with 5+ years of success in education or an education nonprofit;
  • Demonstrated commitment to UP Education Network’s mission to rapidly transform chronically underperforming district schools into extraordinary schools that sustain high achievement over time;
  • Culturally competent and a self-reflective leader who understands the effects of race, class, ethnicity, income, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, and other issues of difference in society and is able to lead direct conversations about them;
  • A builder of authentic relationships with community partners, policymakers, funders and other supporters, able to engage with a variety of individuals and speaks in a clear and compelling manner about the organization’s goals and priorities;
  • Bachelor’s degree, master’s preferred;
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of experience;
  • Experience leading or working in a data team in an educational environment is strongly preferred;
  • Experience with education in a school setting is preferred;
  • A strong grounding in data analysis cycles/frameworks;
  • Demonstrated impact in an analytics-heavy role; expertise with data visualization/business analytics tools, such as Tableau;
  • Understanding of database design and relational data principles;
  • Expertise working with large spreadsheets and data warehouses; experience with SQL, R, and Python is a plus;
  • Experience leading teams;
  • Demonstrable project management and change management skills;
  • Experience leading through influence in a cross-functional space;
  • Experience balancing multiple competing priorities, working in a fast-changing environment;
  • Strong communication skills; experience presenting to senior audiences.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

This position offers a competitive salary range of $85,000-105,000.

This position falls into UP Education Network’s Director salary band. Additionally, UP offers medical insurance coverage and subsidizes the majority of the employee, spouse/domestic partner, and child premiums.
