School Description

Chartwell is a private school on the Monterey Peninsula serving students, grades 2 -12, who are identified as having a specific language-based learning disability, including dyslexia. The mission of Chartwell School is to diagnostically educate students with specific learning variations in a way that provides them with the academic skills, confidence, creativity and perseverance necessary to meet the challenges of mainstream education and lifelong learning.

Position Description

The Technology Teacher is a key member of a dynamic teaching team seeking to employ innovative technology tools and teaching practices for students who think and learn differently. The Teacher operates a Tech Lab/Tinker Space where students use tools, create projects and solve problems.

Teacher is a “learned professional” that directly exercises discretion and independent judgment in all matters relating to oversight and management in the classroom such as ensuring the safety and wellbeing of the students, serving as the responsible agent in the classroom, setting examples and ensuring the integrity of curriculum design, instruction and student learning modalities in and outside the classroom. He/she provides support outside of instruction time to work on lesson preparation, homeroom oversight, special projects, field trips, school events, extracurricular activities, committee meetings, professional development trainings, and other assignments as deemed necessary by the Heads of School.

Classroom Management

The teacher is responsible for:

  • Educating, and leading students in their work.
  • Modeling expected behavior and attitudes based on the mission.
  • Encouraging and engaging students in professional manner.
  • Consulting with the teaching team and administrators to coordinate assignments.
  • Providing and promoting a safe and positive learning environment for students.
  • Adhering to the policies, procedures and practices noted in Chartwell’s Employee Handbook, Core Values of Institutional Commitment, Professional Code of Conduct, job description and other related school documents and directives.
  • Planning, Duties and Implementation

    The teacher is responsible for:

  • Planning and preparing courses and lessons.
  • Working with the teaching team to create and coordinate integrated
  • curriculum.
  • Assessing, recording, and reporting on the progress of students, including
  • providing written narrative assessments according to needs of program.
  • Promoting the general progress and well-being of individual students and
  • the group as a whole.
  • Communicating and consulting with the parents of students.
  • Developing professional growth plans, participating in professional
  • development trainings and performance reviews.
  • Participating in meetings arranged for any of the purposes described above.
  • Education, Qualification, Interest and Skills
  • Prior teaching experience with students who have language-based learning
  • differences like dyslexia.
  • Hold at least a bachelor’s degree in his/her field of instruction.
  • California general education teaching credential (desired)
  • Interest in and experience with active, engaged, collaborative, and
  • personalized learning.
  • Demonstrated innovative talent in the integration of computer technology
  • into their teaching.
  • Be innovative, creative and visionary in program planning and curriculum
  • design.
  • Have evidence of collaborative planning within and across courses and
  • departments.
  • Communicate effectively and have the ability to read and interpret documents, write and correspond. Must be able to interpret both written and oral information and clear directions and explanations.
  • Maintain professional manner at all times and maintain healthy, cooperative working relationships with other Chartwell faculty, staff and administrators.
  • Be able to regularly sit, stand, talk, listen and lift up to 20 lbs.
