Technical Product Lead

EDUCAUSE - Remote - Full time

EDUCAUSE (, a professional association for higher education technology professionals, has an opportunity for two Technical Product Leads on our Information Technology team. These positions will both be performed remotely, reporting to the Director of Enterprise Data Management.

Position Summary: The first position ensures the successful, on-time, quality delivery of EDUCAUSE’s member-facing data reporting tools and benchmarking initiatives for our Analytics Services team, which provide our members with the information they need to better plan, manage, and deliver IT services for their colleges and universities. In this role, you will be responsible for managing the development and maintenance of web applications and internal operational dashboards used to deploy and monitor the application, as well as monitoring KPIs and user inquiries to identify, propose, and implement service improvements. The position manages the work of several third-party development vendors. The second position will manage the development of, an initiative funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF). This web application is designed to advance the grant’s priorities for improving learning outcomes for Black, Latinx, Indigenous students, and poverty-affected students. This grant-funded web application enables faculty and stakeholders at higher education institutions to discover and select courseware solutions for introductory college-level courses. In addition, the Technical Product Lead will be the first contact for users in need of support.

Essential Responsibilities:

Execution of Website Development

  • Manage all technical development activities related to the CourseGateway website or Analytics Services portal.
  • Partner with the Product Manager to align on website requirements and release milestones
  • Partner with third party developers to advise Product Manager on technical feasibility, development timelines, and level of effort for new features and bug fixes, incorporating budgetary and timeline constraints.
  • Coordinate and lead the work of third-party contractors in UI/UX design, database and web development, and data integration needs related to the application
  • Identify and clearly document bugs; prioritize user stories and bug fixes with consideration of impact, budgetary, and timeline constraints in collaboration with the Product Manager
  • Work with Product Manager to establish and maintain a prioritized product backlog; plan work sprints to maximize user impact
  • Develop and maintain a roadmap for longer-term development of the web application
  • Ensure that the software development life cycle includes detailed requirements analysis, consistent architectural design, and rigorous testing
  • Propose and implement improved data workflow processes, quality control standards, and other operational efficiencies.
  • Develop and release a support knowledge base, including writing detailed application documentation and user-facing support articles

Service Operations

  • Assume operational responsibility for all user-facing portal interfaces, including ensuring service availability and successful, on-time operational updates.
  • Create and maintain self-service reports and dashboards that facilitate successful operations of the application, including marketing reports, membership reports, and KPI monitoring dashboards. Current tools include SQL and QlikSense.
  • Act as first responder to user-support inquiries/issues/tickets; manage and distribute inquiries/issues/tickets to relevant team members
  • Ensure follow-through on all user-support inquiries/issues/tickets
  • Maintain a deep understanding of the web application’s technical architecture. Develop and maintain documentation for the application’s operational workflow and operational requirements.
  • Propose and implement improved data workflow processes, quality control standards, and other operational efficiencies

Service and Support:

  • Represent EDUCAUSE in a professional manner at all times; engage with co-workers, volunteers, and members in a civil, caring, respectful way.
  • Participate in EDUCAUSE events and activities as needed. Travel may be required to support EDUCAUSE conferences/events, research team operations, and external events relevant to the position.
  • Act as a departmental liaison with employees, members, volunteers, volunteer groups, and clients.

Required Education and Experience

  • At least five years of professional experience in web application development; experience working with relational databases preferred
  • At least three years of work experience in a technical web application development role preferred
  • Experience leading a technical team preferred; our current technical team consists of third parties/consultants
  • Experience writing and executing testing plans, developing a variety of testing scenarios for others involved in the debugging and QA process helpful
  • Education/training in information technology, software engineering or similar discipline
  • Technical product management experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrated ability to translate business requirements into technical requirements
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple short-range and long-term projects simultaneously and meet all deadlines
  • Experience with continual service improvement methodology, product management, and agile project management
  • Ability to communicate effectively, tactfully, and proactively, in both oral and written form, with a variety of groups including technical, professional, and executive audiences
  • Knowledge or experience with languages used in the web application desired. Current systems require knowledge of the following: SQL, JavaScript, PHP/Laravel, HTML, data visualization libraries
  • Experience with front-end development experience leveraging the following: React, Typescript, SASS / Bootstrap / Material Design helpful
  • Experience leveraging AWS cloud architecture (e.g., AWS API Gateway, AWS Lambda, AWS DocumentDB, AWS Cognito) helpful
  • Experience developing interactive data visualizations based on user requirements using QlikSense, Tableau, or other similar data visualization platforms helpful
  • Familiarity with survey platforms such as Alchemer helpful

The anticipated salary range for this position is $85,000 – 95,000/annually. The actual salary offered to a candidate will be based on factors including but not limited to the depth and extent of relevant experience, education, and additional training/certifications for preferred skills.
