Tax Manager

Job Overview:

The primary responsibilities for the Tax Manager include managing sales and use taxes, property taxes, and gross receipts taxes. This person will also work on special projects as assigned by the VP of Tax.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Works with outsourced service providers to oversee the on-time and accurate completion of all sales and use tax returns and property tax returns including the review and approval of the returns and payments.
  • Coordinates and facilitates the receipt of source documents and workpapers from various departments for tax returns, business filings and special projects.
  • Supervises and mentors the Tax Department staff (three Tax Analysts).
  • Reviews and approves journal entries, prepares and reviews general ledger account reconciliations, and prepares and reviews cash tax forecasts for sales and use taxes, gross receipts taxes and property taxes.
  • Oversees and maintains the tax calendar of due dates for on-time completion and filing.
  • Identifies and establishes new tax business processes, recommends improvements to existing procedures, identifies and mitigates tax risks, reviews monthly use tax accruals, and oversees the receipt, approval, and storage of sales tax exemption certificates at all companies.
  • Implements and makes improvements to new and existing indirect tax software solutions including working with outside tax advisors and internal departments to calculate and accrue sales and use taxes and automate the filing of tax returns.
  • Reviews, approves, and coordinates the on-time remittance of tax payments. Assists with the on-time remittance of income tax payments.
  • Manages tax projects at all operating subsidiaries for indirect taxes.
  • Responds to and remediates notices including reviewing tax assessments, preparing written responses and corresponding with tax agencies.
  • Assists other departments with tax matters. These departments include: Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Bids and Contracts, Legal and Accounting.
  • Oversees all business licenses and tax registration filings, prepares and files annual business license renewals as well as annual US residency certifications and form W-9 requests, and works with other internal departments, external customers and vendors to help with and resolve sales and use tax matters.
  • Works with government auditors including researching, gathering, analyzing, and preparing the data and written responses to information document requests, and responds to tax inquiries.
  • Works with the outsourced property tax service provider to coordinate requests for data to ensure the accurate and on-time completion of tax renditions and prepares payment requests for property tax bills and assessments.

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree required, CPA and Master’s degree preferred.
  • 7 to 10 years tax experience in state and local sales and use taxes and property taxes.
  • 2-3 years of people management experience.
  • Experience with integrating newly acquired entities into existing operations.
  • Strong communication, analytical and project management skills.
  • Ability and willingness to comprehend, analyze and interpret complex problems and develop and implement successful solutions.
  • Detail oriented and ability to prioritize and handle many tax projects and returns to meet deadlines.
  • A team player with a winning positive attitude.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and make business process improvements.
  • Familiarity with Avalara and/or Workday preferred.
  • Experience with implementing indirect tax engine solutions desired.
  • Experience managing outsourced tax providers and mentoring staff preferred.
