The Last Mile - San Francisco, CA - Full time

Position: Systems Software Engineer

Location: 717 Market Street, Ste. 100, San Francisco, CA (and remote)

Reports to: Director of Engineering

Hours: Full time, 40 hrs/week

The Last Mile is a non-profit organization that runs computer coding computer labs inside prisons and prepares inmates for success upon reentry. We need help improving our software and infrastructure as we expand rapidly in California and beyond. We are a purpose driven organization looking for a motivated individual who wants to make an outsized impact working alongside our tight-knit, experienced team.

In this position you will develop creative and secure solutions to provide inmates with the tools to learn valuable skills in software development. You will leverage and build on open source tools to scale up our learning platform. Some of the tools and applications we use:

  • Linux / KVM / LXC / Docker / VMWare
  • Google Cloud Platform
  • Google Chrome / HTML5 / ES6
  • Chrome OS / Chromium OS
  • Canvas LMS
  • Gitlab CE
  • WebRTC
  • Auth0

Some of your responsibilities:

  • Develop, architect, improve our hybrid cloud/on-site cloud learning management systems
  • Maintain and implement security controls and procedures
  • Occasionally travel to facilities as needed to maintain, configure or install new hardware
  • Ensure proper functioning server hardware, operating systems, desktop computers, and application software
  • Interface with classroom facilitators to improve processes and discover pain points
  • Provide technical documentation and recommendations to state government organizations

  • Contribute to the class curriculum by leveraging existing content or creating your own tutorials
  • Improve our curated NPM mirror
  • Support and develop an offline Android mobile development training computer lab
  • Develop a CISCO CCNA computer training lab
  • Configure, deploy, and support a Student VM lab
  • Develop learning management system plug-ins
  • Update or improve our Stack Overflow mirror
  • Improve our offline search engine
  • Develop a custom WebRTC Video conferencing / Screen sharing solution
  • Security monitoring and auditing
  • Deploy web archiving software such as Webrecorder
  • Develop a returned citizens portal
  • Manage returned citizens working on any of the above
