Reporting to the Senior Manager of Elementary Programs, the Summer Learning Teacher will be responsible for leading phonics and math workshops with groups of 18-22 elementary school students, including creating a culminating project, in our nationally-recognized REAL Kids program. Summer Learning Teachers also mentor college-age Youth Workers, supporting their success as aspiring educators, and attend program-wide events such as pep rallies and performances. This is an exciting opportunity for results-driven, innovative teachers to hone their craft by using an interdisciplinary approach to literacy and math, coaching aspiring educators, and contributing to educational equity for all students in DREAM's communities.Responsibilities:

  • Plan and teach ELA and Math components using curriculum based in the Science of Reading and Constructivist Learning Theory;
  • Mentor 2-3 college-age Youth Workers in using an SEL curriculum. Youth workers lead activities designed to improve students' social-emotional learning (SEL), and support Teachers during instruction;
  • Use data to prepare effectively and to meet the needs of all learners;
  • Monitor breakfast, lunch, and recess;
  • Attend meetings and professional development;
  • Implement all health and safety protocols as required, including ensuring child safety and responding appropriately to any incidents.

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to provide ELA and math instruction to groups of elementary students required;
  • Experience using curriculum aligned with the Science of Reading (ex: CKLA) and Constructivist Learning Theory (ex: math Story Problems) preferred;
  • At least two years of lead teaching experience, with a record of improving student achievement preferred;
  • New York State certification in Childhood Education preferred;
  • Strong ability to engage students in a classroom environment, required;
  • Knowledge and experience with social-emotional learning, preferred;
  • A desire to make a difference in the lives of our students, families and community;
  • Ability to take initiative and maintain flexibility;
  • Desire and ability to receive and implement feedback;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with various audiences (including colleagues, students, families);
  • A commitment to working with diverse populations of families and students;
  • Must be able to work in-person at the program site during program hours;
  • A strong belief in the mission and values of DREAM, including the belief that all students can succeed, and a deep desire to make a difference in the lives of our students, families, and community.

Commitment:

  • Start date: June 28, 2023
  • End date: August 4, 2023
  • Days & hours: Monday-Friday, 8am-1pm

Location:

  • Placements available in East Harlem and the South Bronx.

Compensation:

  • DREAM offers competitive compensation commensurate with relevant experience with the potential for a seasonal increase. The hourly rate for this position for incoming staff is between $49 and $55. New hires receive an offer within the range based on their number of years of experience as a lead teacher and internal equity.
