Overview of Responsibilities:

This posting is for Special Education Coordinator for the California Charter Schools Association (CCSA). This position is designed to support the statewide work of the special education team, which includes technical assistance to schools, special education advocacy at the local and state levels, special education data collection, and engagement with SELPAs and charter school authorizers in ensuring quality options for charter schools.

Special Education Mission:

The charter school movement is at the center of education reform nationwide, and an integral part of this reform lies in transforming the ways in which vulnerable student populations are served. The mission of CCSA’s Special Education team is to expand the range of quality educational options in order to improve educational outcomes for vulnerable student populations. Our strategy is a combination of securing access to the resources that charter schools need and monitoring the effects of those efforts on students, schools, and the broader movement.

The role of the CCSA Special Ed Team includes:

  • * Identifying and disseminating information on successful service delivery options in charter schools;
  • * Ensuring that charter schools have knowledge of and access to funding streams available to support the education of vulnerable student populations;
  • * Facilitating initiatives among groups of charter schools that will lead to increased infrastructure to support vulnerable populations;
  • * Negotiating arrangements with SELPAs and authorizers that provide charter schools with flexibility and autonomy;
  • * Collecting relevant data to identify challenges and solutions in the service of vulnerable students; and
  • * Advocating on local, state and national levels to increase awareness of the successes that the charter setting offers to vulnerable populations.

Essential Duties of Special Education Coordinator:

Within the role described above, the Special Education Coordinator is responsible to execute on CCSA priorities through the following specific responsibilities including, but not limited to:

  • * Identify charter schools that are successfully serving students with disabilities to highlight best practices for increasing the range of quality services and instructional options for vulnerable student populations.
  • * Support efforts to collect qualitative data on successful special education models through gathering and communicating student and family success stories.
  • * Support regional charter school networks or consortiums that foster collaboration and promote the sharing of services, risk, and expertise to increase the availability of high-quality special education programs in the charter setting.
  • * Facilitate comprehensive trainings, develop and disseminate resources to provide charter schools with a sound understanding of special education laws and programming.
  • * Oversee the process for identifying high quality service providers.
  • Update web-based special education member resources.
  • * Collaborate with the CCSA Communications team to ensure regular sharing of special education data in both local, state, and national arenas.
  • * Manage the systems associated with implementation of the work on the special ed team.

Required Education and Experience:

  • * BA or BS required.
  • * Special education teaching credential recommended (may be substituted with demonstrated knowledge and work experience in the field of education).

Candidate Capabilities/Qualifications:

  • * Experience managing multiple, simultaneous work efforts and a strong ability to plan strategically.
  • * Understand and appreciate the use of outcomes-based data and information to achieve strategic priorities.
  • * Ability to research issues and develop high quality resources for informational and educational purposes.
  • * Ability to develop effective communications for a variety of mediums (weekly member newsletter, web resource library, member blog, etc.)
  • Membership-driven service orientation.
  • * Experience working independently as well in a highly collaborative team environment.
