Social Studies Curriculum Writer

Position Summary

The Social Studies/Civics Curriculum Writer is responsible for the development, writing, editing, and revision of high-quality curriculum materials to support teachers in the implementation of Project Based Learning. The position includes writing, editing, reviewing, and refinement of PBLWorks curriculum, tools, and resources and ensuring alignment across all products, services, and publications. The curriculum writer will be involved in all aspects of creating PBLNow curriculum, including lesson plans, student worksheets, and assessment materials.

The curriculum materials will focus on K-12 social studies and civics, organized into units of 4-5 weeks of instruction, and focusing on topics of social, environmental, and racial justice. The materials will be supplemental, interdisciplinary, and open educational resources (OER). In subsequent projects, the writer could also work at different grade levels, subject areas, and topics.

Key Responsibilities:

Curriculum Development and Writing

  • Research, design, develop and write thoughtful, engaging, and easy-to-use lesson plans, learning experiences, student materials, and teacher materials that align to content standards, socio-emotional learning goals, PBL practices, and that focus on achieving equity.
  • Map out, design, and write strategic instructional plans, sequences of lessons, standards-alignment documents, and pacing guides.
  • Design formative and summative assessments, rubrics, and teacher guidance for utilizing assessment practices.
  • Select or contribute to the design of videos, interactives, and other multimedia content used in instructional contexts.
  • Revise, edit and refine existing student and teacher materials in order to strengthen alignment to outcomes, improve teacher PBL practice and implementation, and advance the organizational racial equity imperative.
  • Contribute to the overall design for curriculum materials at PBL Now, to include pedagogical strategies, structure, length, topic selection, and other factors in alignment with best practices for PBL defined by PBLWorks and the broader field.
  • Contribute to decision-making about content management systems, technology platforms, content partnerships, and strategic direction of PBL Now.

Project collaboration

  • Follow project plans for all assigned projects, including meeting deadlines and milestones, coordinating work across team members, and adjusting work based on organizational priorities.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with team members and contractors about progress, deadlines, challenges, and solutions.
  • Respond constructively to suggestions, feedback, and editing of your writing and curriculum development.
  • Assist with the implementation of curriculum and professional development pilots in partner school districts. Assist in collecting and reviewing data from pilots to inform the development and revision of curriculum materials.
  • Support the training of National Faculty, the PBLWorks Sales team, and Directors of District and School Leadership to use resources and understand, communicate about, and/or facilitate curriculum implementation.

  • Engage in ongoing individual and collective learning about how to advance racial equity through Project Based Learning for all students, especially Black and Brown students
  • Attend Novato-based or centrally located meetings as needed, at least two times/year
  • Travel 10-20% of the time.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements, Skills, and Abilities

The successful candidate will bring this experience to the role:

  • Experience as a curriculum developer, experience with performance and portfolio assessment, and experience with online learning.
  • Three or more years of experience as a writer and editor of student and teacher-facing materials in social studies, ethnic studies and/or civics.
  • Experience across print and digital curriculum systems, including common learning management systems and interactive tools.
  • Deep knowledge of Project Based Learning, preferably gained through first hand experience as a PBL teacher, coach or leader.
  • Deep knowledge of culturally relevant & responsive teaching practices and designing for equity
  • Deep knowledge of relevant content standards, including the C3 framework and associated state standards for social studies and civics.
  • Two or more years of K-12 classroom teaching experience.

  • Competent with Word, Excel, Google Apps, and willing to learn additional technology tools adopted by the organization.
  • Experience authoring into content management systems and designing in Adobe Suite (InDesign, InCopy, Photoshop) is desired.

This position is a remote assignment. Some travel (when it is safe to travel) will be required (up to 10 – 20%).

Compensation & Benefits

The Curriculum Writer role is a full-time exempt position with full health benefits (including medical, vision and dental), generous benefits including 403(b) contribution of 6-12%, and life and disability insurance. BIE offers a competitive salary (commensurate with experience) and a generous benefits package.

This is a fixed term position, until December 2024.
