KQED - San Francisco, California - Part time

KQED helps educators to create learning environments for the 21st century by promoting media literacy, student voice, civic engagement, and creative expression using digital media. The main products from education are: KQED Teach, an online professional development platform with courses that teach teachers media-making skills and how to integrate media literacy into their classrooms; KQED Learn, a discussion platform for middle and high schools students to practice critical thinking and media making in response to video prompts from our Above the Noise series; and PBS LearningMedia CA, a digital library of standards-aligned media clips and curricula for the classroom. All of KQED’s educational products are available for free.

KQED Education seeks a part-time, temporary Social Media Specialist to work 10 hours/week from now through January 31, 2020.

Essential Functions:

The Social Media Specialist, Education is accountable for contributing to the strategic audience goals of the KQED Education department by creating and managing all aspects of our social media feeds.

  • Plans, manages, and maintains the primary Education social media channels Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube and, as needed, the secondary Education channels like Instagram, Pinterest and LinkedIn
  • Creates posts with engaging copy and images customized for our target audience segments for both organic and paid campaigns
  • Monitors responses and reactions from social media audience, responding to comments and escalating to relevant personnel in Marketing and Communications, Membership and Content as and when necessary
  • Works with cross-department KQED social media team to pitch content and support strategy
  • Regularly collects, analyzes, and reports social media data to stakeholders

Knowledge/Experience Required:

  • Track record of success at increasing engagement on social platforms and driving traffic to products from social platforms
  • Skilled at writing sharelines and post copy and editing images for posts
  • Understanding of and ability to apply best practices across multiple social media platforms including but not limited to YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook
  • Project management experience in digital and social media and high competency with scheduling tools like SproutSocial or Hootsuite
  • Knowledge of current and developing marketing communications strategies across social media, mobile and developing technologies
  • Strong communication skills, both written and in person, and the ability to interact professionally with a diverse group of stakeholders across the KQED organization.
  • Fluent with productivity and communication tools like Google Docs and Slack
  • Ability to meet deadlines and goals while working under pressure.
  • A true team player who understands how to work productively in a team environment with others who may have disparate and conflicting goals.
  • Ability to follow KQED journalistic standards and maintain a public presence that is nonpartisan and unbiased.

Knowledge/Experience Desired:

  • Experience as a teacher or working in the education field
  • Commitment to educational equity; passionate about digital media for learning and youth voice
