The Level Playing Field Institute is now SMASH! SMASH Academy, a program that US News and World Report called “Perhaps the most ambitious program to encourage African American and Latino students in STEM fields” is heading into its 15th summer this year. SMASH is an organization committed to eliminating the barriers faced by underrepresented people of color in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) and fostering their untapped talent for the advancement of our nation.

Founded in 2001, SMASH is an Oakland-based nonprofit organization that operates the Summer Math and Science Honors Academy (SMASH), a year-round STEM-focused academic program that serves underrepresented high school students. SMASH Academy is a five-week, three-year Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) residential academic acceleration program for motivated, high school students from underrepresented populations (African-American, Latinx/Hispanic, Southeast Asian and/or Pacific Islander, and Native American), who have demonstrated an aptitude for science and math.

When SMASH scholars graduate from SMASH Academy, they are in their senior year of high school and officially become a part of our SMASH Alumni Program. The alumni program includes, but is not limited to: Senior College Preparatory Program, SMASH Rising Internship Preparatory Program, SMASH Alumni Board, SMASH Alumni Summit, Alumni Newsletter.

This is a pivotal time for SMASH as we begin building on the success of our education programs, we are embarking on an aggressive expansion strategy to achieve national impact. Reporting to the Alumni Programs + Partnerships Director (APPD), the Alumni Program Manager (APM) will play an integral role in delivering and sustaining the transformative educational experience that SMASH alumni need to pursue, persist, and succeed in STEM. The APM will support the rapidly growing alumni program by developing the communications, operations, and programs to best support SMASH alumni in their senior year of high school, during their college years and as they transition into the workforce.

SMASH is seeking to hire individuals who will contribute to our larger aim of developing our scholars to be STEM practitioners who are civically aware and social justice oriented, equipped to employ their STEM knowledge and skills for the betterment of their local, national, and global communities.


Program Design and Management

  • Support the Alumni Program + Partnerships Director with high school senior and alumni programming design and implementation, including, but not limited to:
    • Hiring and performance management of seasonal program staff
    • Planning and implementation of senior and alumni programming
    • Leading processes to recruit alumni participants
    • Designing and delivering SMASH Alumni Summit 2020
  • Ensure programmatic efficacy and alignment between SMASH Academy and Alumni Program priorities

Senior, Alumni and Family Relations

  • Develop and maintain communication and engagement strategy across a variety of platforms to ensure regular alumni communication (i.e. weekly newsletter, Hustle, Facebook, etc.)
  • Design and implement SMASH Alumni Parent Engagement Program
  • Manage SMASH Senior College Preparatory Program through regular communication, guidance, and event planning support
  • Lead SMASH Alumni Leadership Board

Relationship Development, Management, and Strategic Partnerships

  • Identify and pursue strategic relationship and partnership prospects
  • Foster strong relationships with the SMASH alumni community, corporate partners and other supporters
  • Participate in conferences and community outreach to establish SMASH as a leading national STEM program


Desired Skills and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree preferred (completed or in progress)
  • Minimum of three (3) years in program development and management in education and/or youth development, or equivalent experience
  • Strong leadership abilities including the presence to build a strong org culture and sense of team
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in mentoring and coaching youth, especially those from diverse ethnic, cultural, and economically underserved backgrounds
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, presentation and facilitation skills
  • Self-starter with ability to work on multiple initiatives at the same time; excellent project management skills
  • Ability to be flexible, resilient and adaptable to changing priorities; self-reflective and prioritizes thinking outside of the box
  • Detail obsessive with strong organizational and time-management skills; solid and creative problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to STEM diversity
  • Travel as needed for planning and programming

Work Demands

  • Regular evening and weekend work may be required leading up to summer program launch during March-August
  • A minimum 3-year commitment to the role is desired
