What can Reading Plus offer you?

We're passionate about helping students become successful, lifelong readers. Reading Plus offers you a team-focused working environment while also being a widely distributed and remote-work company. We have an amazing employee culture of collaboration, innovation, transparency, and camaraderie. Reading Plus can offer you a growing career in EdTech and the opportunity to get involved with an adaptive and personalized literacy technology solution for children in grades 3 - 12. Join our team and change lives. Really.

About the Role:

Reading Plus is looking for an experienced Site Reliability Engineer to join an emerging but mighty team of SREs to help us deliver best-in-class education technology software. This role will be reporting to the Director of SRE; advising on all aspects of availability, latency, performance, efficiency, change management, monitoring, emergency response, and capacity planning. Our daily work improves the future potential and prospects of children and young adults in grades 3-12.

Join us and work with a team of top-notch developers who are designing the future of education technology software. If you would like to apply your skills to affect a positive outcome in the world, Reading Plus may be your new home. We would love to meet you!

What You'll Be Doing:

  • Producing simple, readable infrastructure-as-code using tools such as Terraform and Ansible.
  • Leveraging your hands-on development experience in one compiled language (such as Java) and one interpreted language (such as Python).
  • Applying your AWS expertise to help us deliver resilient systems backed up by a best-in-class infrastructure.
  • Ensuring the scalability, responsiveness, and resilience of the Reading Plus platform which has an average 99.9% uptime.
  • Helping us achieve best-in-class observability, monitoring, logging, root cause analysis, and high-availability operations (through canary deployments and other zero-downtime techniques).
  • Growing and nurturing the collective knowledge of the SRE and QA Team through daily mentoring, coaching, and removing of blockers.
  • Contributing directly to our software development process with your hands-on programming skills to build QA and Infrastructure automation software; researching, learning, and presenting findings on new technologies and approaches to complex problems.
  • Helping to shape and mold our multi-year strategic roadmap to ensure that we continue to push the envelope and deliver an exceptional user experience for children, young adults, teachers, and internal stakeholders.

About You:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science/Computer Engineering or comparable technology related degree preferred
  • Exposure to a modern, compiled, non-JVM language such as Go or Rust, or a strong interest to learn and share your knowledge
  • Prior experience with modern DevOps practices and tools, such as container orchestration with Kubernetes, and the observability of distributed systems
  • Prior experience with feature flag development using a tool such as LaunchDarkly, and insight into the practices and processes that make feature flags a successful approach to achieving a high delivery tempo
  • An online portfolio of your previous work, such as OSS contributions, a personal GitHub account, a blog, a YouTube channel, or other material in the public domain
