Senior School Success Officer

XQ Institute - Oakland, California - Full time

Little in our world looks the same today as it did 100 years ago. We’ve gone from the switchboard to the smartphone and the Model T to the Tesla. Yet high school in America—the system responsible for setting young people on the path to a bright future—has remained virtually unchanged. Our students deserve better.

At XQ, we fuel America’s collective creativity to transform our public high schools into engines of excellence and equity so every student graduates with the skills and knowledge they need to thrive in an ever-changing world. We work to inspire and amplify meaningful solutions—and real, enduring results. Learn more about us at

To help us meet our ambitious goals, XQ is seeking a Senior School Success Officer (“Officer”), whose primary responsibility will be to oversee and support the XQ Super School leaders in order to advance their vision and implement their school design.

The Role

The Senior School Success Officer will work as part of a team led by the Managing Director of School Success to lead all aspects of the relationship between XQ and the XQ Schools and Awardees. The Senior School Success Officer will be a critical thought partner to the Managing Director of School Success, the School Success Team, XQ Schools, XQ State and District partners and additional partners.

XQ is seeking a motivated, enthusiastic, and highly organized individual who has national experience in high school redesign, with particular expertise with innovating and improving large, “comprehensive” high schools. This individual is skilled at balancing coaching and management roles to ensure schools’ visions are actualized.

Key Responsibilities:

Build authentic, accountable, and supportive working relationships with XQ Cohort teams to ensure they are aligned to the XQ mission and that they are activating the vision of their grant applications:

  • Serve as the lead for all assigned XQ schools. This will include aspects of coaching, grants management, technical assistance coordination, implementation of the annual cycle, and overseeing or executing all school-specific work.
  • For all assigned schools, ensure the implementation of XQ’s overall strategy related to goals, monitor grant agreements, review progress reports and payment requests, maintain ongoing communications with grantees, and oversee ongoing analysis of effectiveness.
  • Where appropriate, delegate projects to and assist in the supervision of program associates and program assistants to manage and accomplish the work of the School Success Team and XQ in an efficient and effectively planned manner.
  • Manage and address requests by the XQ Schools for support and technical assistance.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact and manage communication flow and systems for the various work streams related to each school.
  • Match up school needs with technical assistance providers who have high school redesign expertise and may be candidates to help build the capacity of XQ schools or other school builders to implement the XQ Design Principles.
  • Facilitate and oversee all activities of the annual cycle and grants management process (in concert with the grants manager).  Facilitate and oversee the contracts and scope of work for select professional development providers or other experts who will be working with the XQ Schools.
  • Conduct on-site visits, professional development services, activities, and events with the schools and the providers that are working to develop the capacity of the XQ Schools.
  • Lead regular check-in calls. Work with other team members to create processes and opportunities to capture the school’s capacity and progress for both design fidelity and practice quality as well as root causes of their challenges.
  • Work with the School Success Team to curate and document aspects of the school’s development and progress.
  • Continuously identify key educational resources, including research, tools, webinars, and other web-based professional development opportunities that will build the capacity of the XQ Schools.
  • Support the development of XQ tools that can be used with the Cohort, Awardees, and other school builders.

  • 10-15 years of experience with significant expertise in education practice and 'comprehensive' high school redesign, preferably in low-income and minority communities.
  • Experience as school, district, and/or network leader
  • Experience with technical assistance or professional development.
  • Understanding of the national school reform movement, school culture, and re-imagining the education movement.
  • Experience with large high schools, districts, or school development orgs.
  • Master’s Degree in Education or a related field strongly preferred.

Key Skills and Values of the Ideal Candidate:

  • Strong and savvy coach and collaborator
  • Growth mindset
  • National education perspective
  • Strategic and creative problem solver
  • Thrives in a fast paced, high intensity environment
  • Flexible and willing to perform other tasks as assigned
  • Self-starter who enjoys working independently
  • Ability to travel ~50% of the time.
