Senior School Success Officer

XQ Institute - Oakland, California or Remote - Full time

To help us meet our ambitious goals, XQ is seeking a Senior School Success Officer (“Officer”) whose primary responsibility will be to oversee and support the XQ Super School leaders in order to advance their vision and implement their school design.

The Role

The Senior School Success Officer will work as part of a team led by the Managing Director for School Success to support XQ schools and awardees in their strategies and efforts to reach their goals for reimagined high school. The Senior School Success Officer will be a critical thought partner to the Managing Director of School Success, the School Success Team, XQ Schools, and XQ partners.

XQ is seeking a motivated, enthusiastic, and highly organized individual who has national experience in high school innovation and redesign within a district, charter management organization, and/or school development organization. This individual is skilled at balancing coaching and management roles to ensure vision is actualized.


Key Responsibilities:

Build authentic, accountable, and supportive working relationships with XQ Super School Teams to ensure they are aligned to the XQ mission and that they are activating the vision of the application:

  • Serve as the lead for all assigned XQ schools. This will include collaboration with these schools as they realize their visions and embody the XQ Design Principles. Aspects of this work include coaching, grants management, customized technical assistance coordination, implementation of an annual cycle, and oversight for or execution of XQ work related to the schools.
  • For all assigned schools, ensure the implementation of XQ’s overall strategy to support the schools in meeting our mutual goals; monitor schools’ grant agreements, progress towards milestones, budgets; and maintain ongoing communications with schools.
  • Provide proactive and responsive support to the XQ Schools and build trusting relationships with school leaders, teachers, staff, and partners.
  • Facilitate and oversee all activities of the annual cycle and grants management process (in concert with the grants manager).
  • Serve as the primary point of contact and manage communication flow and systems for the various work streams related to each school.
  • Manage relationships with capacity-building organizations and companies that may contract with XQ Institute to ensure effectiveness of delivery, with specific attention to identifying strengths, particular areas of expertise, and limitations. This includes matching school needs with technical assistance providers who have high school redesign expertise and may be candidates to help build the capacity of XQ schools or other school builders to implement the XQ Design Principles.
  • Conduct on-site visits, contribute to the XQ Community of Practice and participate in learning activities and events with the schools and the providers that are working to develop the capacity of the XQ Schools.
  • Work with other team members to create processes and opportunities to capture the school’s capacity and progress for both design fidelity and practice quality as well as root causes of their challenges.
  • Provide strategy development and oversight for XQ by serving as a thought-partner to the leadership team and senior advisors. This will ensure continuous development of the XQ strategy to ensure that its substance and delivery are consistent with the philosophy of the XQ Institute.
  • Continuously identify key educational resources, including research, tools, webinars and other professional development opportunities that will build the capacity of the XQ Schools.
  • Support the development of XQ tools that can be used with the XQ Schools and beyond.
  • Collaborate with colleagues at XQ, at the XQ schools, and with partners on the development and implementation of the XQ Student Performance Framework for continuous improvement.


  • At least 10 years of professional experience with significant depth in education practice and high school innovation and redesign, preferably in low-income urban, rural, or suburban communities.
  • Experience as a school principal, district administrator, and/or network leader or similar role
  • Experience with provision of continuous improvement coaching, technical assistance, and/or professional development.
  • A national perspective on school change movements combined with a deep commitment to equity, student-centered learning, and college and career readiness for all students.
  • Experience with high schools, districts, charter management organizations, and/or school development organizations.
  • Master’s Degree in Education or a related field.

  • Project Management, Delegation, and Supervision: Delegates projects to and assists in the supervision of program associates and program assistants to manage and accomplish the work of School Support and XQ in an efficient and effectively-planned manner.
  • Knowledge Management: Manages workload to ensure sufficient time is allotted to knowledge acquisition and management to push out stories of the XQ grantees.
  • Internal Integration of Work: Identifies opportunities to collaborate across the XQ team.
  • Expertise: Maintains depth and expertise in XQ’s areas of interest as well as major policy reform efforts and initiatives that impact these issues.
  • Partnerships: Partners with other organizations and foundations and XQ staff to design and implement integrated programming to maximize impact and use of XQ’s resources.
  • Team Player and Leader: Thrives in a fast paced, high intensity environment while working effectively as part of a dynamic team; acts as a strategic and creative problem solver, coach, mentor, and collaborator with a growth mindset.

  • Ability to travel ~50% of the time.
  • Location: preference for Bay Area.
