Senior Research Associate, EdSurge

As a Senior Research Associate for Edsurge, you will directly support qualitative and mixed-methods research projects for the EdSurge Research team. Through research and storytelling, EdSurge Research conducts and disseminates actionable research that amplifies the voices, experiences and best practices of educators and learners, particularly those in underserved, underrepresented or vulnerable populations in U.S. communities. Our work contributes to and pushes existing conversations about complex educational issues and solutions by diversifying, exploring, and illuminating these perspectives. We provide evidence-backed information to educational stakeholders that can be acted upon to improve practices of learning and teaching. In this role, a passion for education, storytelling and EdSurge Research’s mission is a must.

The Senior Research Associate should be detail oriented, a quick learner, and have experience doing independent research and writing in the education space. She/he/they should feel comfortable working independently and collaboratively, and should be able to—and excited to—adapt as needs change.



  • Conduct literature reviews and background research for EdSurge Research projects and stories by synthesizing academic and non-academic literature on various PK-16 educational topics (such as diversity, equity and inclusion in education, and educator mental health and wellness).
  • Manage data collection and research activities such as recruitment, outreach, and communication with research participants, designing and administering interview protocols, facilitating learning circles and focus groups, etc.
  • Analyze and synthesize research findings (e.g., participate in coding and analysis sessions; writing up findings in articles or reports)
  • Communicate and disseminate research findings (e.g., writing public-facing journalistic or magazine-style articles about research findings for wide audiences; interviewing or presenting at conferences or in panels)
  • Support marketing and communications strategy for projects and team (e.g., drafting and implementing communications plans, tracking impact metrics, contributing to social media campaigns and drafting email copy)
  • Support community engagement strategy (e.g., fostering and maintaining positive relationships with diverse educators participants and networks)
  • Contribute to planning for new research projects, including developing research protocols and approaches, and working with other researchers, the journalism team, and contributing writers for EdSurge Research series.

  • A bachelor’s degree, preferably in education, communication, journalism, humanities, social sciences or related fields, or equivalent experience required
  • Experience conducting qualitative or mixed-methods research about education and/or edtech
  • Demonstrated depth of knowledge in one or more education subfields, and familiarity with qualitative and mixed-methods research methodologies in the social sciences
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong project management and organization skills
  • Experience facilitating and moderating conversations, or presenting to or teaching groups
  • Experience building connections and fostering communities
  • Facility with G Suite/Microsoft tools
  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Cloud, Canva, Infogram or similar tools
