Position Summary

We are looking for an experienced communications and PR professional with a passion for education to help tell the KnowledgeWorks story. The Senior Public Relations Specialist, reporting to the Director of Marketing and Communications, is responsible for developing and implementing strategies to effectively communicate and amplify the KnowledgeWorks message in support of organizational goals.From a strategic standpoint, this person will develop powerful narratives and enhance the organization’s presence across online and offline channels, while collaborating with other team members on marketing programs. This person develops and implements strategic PR campaigns and events, proactively develops media and influencer relationships, manages organizational messaging and ensures all external communications aligns and supports brand identity.


Develop and implement strategic PR programs to achieve significant increases in brand awareness.

  • Work with communications team to achieve organizational goals and objectives by administering communications and public relations initiatives
  • Develop compelling story angles that elevate KnowledgeWorks’ brand position, staff expertise and the impact of personalized learning
  • Identify and cultivate relationships with key education journalists, bloggers and influencers from national and trade publications and education organizations
  • Pitch stories to both national and local media. Achieve highest visibility for in print, broadcast, TV and online media outlets
  • Develop clear and compelling pitch letters, press releases and bylined articles and guest blogs
  • Field and evaluate incoming media requests and delegate accordingly
  • Identify and monitor media trends, news cycles and other PR opportunities.
  • Proactively manage editorial calendars
  • Proactively manage conference events calendar and make recommendations to leadership team about strategic conference session submission opportunities based on target audiences
  • Manage media contact lists and measure/track results of PR programs via Meltwater media tool
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of communication plans and event strategies
  • Maintain the organization’s online newsroom

    Write, edit and proof varied and integrated content for cross-organizational communications, including website, print publications, newsletters, media and public relations.

  • Write powerful narratives and create content libraries by audience and platforms to serve multiple uses across organizational needs
  • Serve as editor/proof reader for the development, production and maintenance of the company's internal and external communication vehicles
  • Work with communications team to execute external communications including brochures, product sheets, collateral, web content, newsletters, event materials, testimonials, and other support tools

    Develop and manage organizational messaging to ensure consistent and effective external voice and tone that aligns with brand identity

  • In partnership with leadership team, develop messaging platform that aligns brand identity and audience needs
  • Develop audience profiles to effectively capture needs of target audiences. Complete regular interviews to stay in touch with customer needs and keep information current
  • Train current and new staff on messaging platform, audience profiles, brand style guide and other messaging tools


  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing or related field
  • 3-5 years of experience in media relations
  • Exceptional communication and organizational skills
  • Experience engaging with and developing messaging for traditionally underserved communities
  • Completely proficient in Word, blogging platforms, and posting to social networks such as LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter

Specialized knowledge/skills/abilities:

  • Proven record of securing media placements and developing beneficial media relationships. Experience working with education media and existing relationships with national education-related publications and journalists strongly preferred.
  • Requires a combination marketing and publishing mindset, with the most important aspect being to think “customer first”
  • Training as a print or broadcast journalist with a “nose” for the story. Training and experience in how to tell a story using words, images, video and/or audio and an understanding of how to create content that draws an audience
  • Skilled at both long-form content creation and real-time (immediate) content creation and distribution strategies and tactics
  • Experience managing communications initiatives across multiple futions and/or business units
  • Excellent writing ability, knowledge of AP style and experience writing for a variety of media
  • Strong organizational and follow-up skills, as well as attention to detail
  • Experience creating a resource library of content
  • Incredible people skills; ability to effectively interview anyone from a superintendent, teacher, student, major donor or civic leader; in person or over the phone
  • Nimbleness, can-do attitude.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment; flexibility when prioritizing assignments
  • Proven ability to build consensus and work effectively to communicate and exchange information at all levels of the organization
  • Ability to leverage and/or engage others to accomplish projects
  • Flexible and ability to adapt quickly in a changing, growing environment
