Senior Manager of Talent Acquisition

The Primary School - East Palo Alto, California - Full time

ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION

The Primary School is expanding the boundaries of traditional education. Our holistic model weaves together education, health, and family support services to ensure underserved children have the system of care they need to lead meaningful and emotionally, mentally, and physically healthy lives. The Primary School was founded in 2015, and we received seed funding by the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, a major national philanthropy.

Our approach has three defining characteristics:

  • We start early. We start working with parents and enroll children into our program as early as birth to reach them at their most critical stage in development.
  • We work with - not around - families. We know that parents and caregivers are the most important people in a child’s life. We partner with them to enhance the education and health of their children.
  • We integrate multiple systems to serve the whole child. Our unique model unites health care and education, building a multi-disciplinary team and holistic system of care around a child’s full needs.

In 2016, we opened our flagship school in East Palo Alto, California, with our first class of four-year-olds. We have grown to serve over 300 children and their families via a 0-3 parent/child program, a preschool and elementary school, and a parent wellness program.

Our ultimate goal is to create a game-changing system of care for children that can be replicated across the country. To that end, we are building a model that can be effectively implemented in diverse communities and sustained on public funding. In 2020 we continued to expand our student and family community in East Palo Alto and launched our site in Hayward, California. It’s an exciting time to join the team!

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Primary School requires a community of talented and committed staff who believe deeply in the value of integrating across historically siloed systems of education, health, and family supports. The ideal candidate for this position will be an experienced professional in the area of talent acquisition strategy. From generating a pipeline to maintaining a successful offer acceptance rate, the Senior Manager of Talent Acquisition will own the entire candidate process.

This Senior Manager will establish organization-wide practices for the effective recruitment and selection of new staff, and will have a clear stance on how to promote effective strategies for increasing the hiring of diverse team members and a commitment to anti-racism. This is an ideal opportunity for someone who can manage multiple priorities and is a highly organized leader. The Senior Manager of Talent Acquisition will report to the VP of Talent, Finance, and Operations.

Responsibilities

  • Define, design, and implement the plan to find great people for a growing organization. In partnership with TPS leaders, translate in-depth understanding of program and organizational priorities into strategic direction, talent map, and succession plan needed to achieve staffing goals in the short and long term. Fully own the end-to-end recruitment process, ensuring the successful launch of each new school/program year by meeting target timelines during hiring cycles.
  • Partner with hiring managers at all levels to develop detailed candidate profiles and hiring strategies. Develop customized job descriptions and assessment materials; lead candidate sourcing and vetting; coordinate and execute interviews; and manage offers and negotiations.
  • Establish metrics to track hiring success, measure progress towards goals, and adjust processes as needed. Use metrics to drive talent priorities across the organization and track the success of talent as a service function. Regularly communicate progress to VP of Talent, Finance, and Operations, hiring managers, and other team members.
  • Cultivate strong talent pipeline partnerships and develop impactful marketing messages. Build and nurture relationships with promising candidates and develop powerful dissemination practices that get the right job information to the right talent pools and allies. Develop engaging marketing messaging that promotes the TPS brand, attracts applicants across various platforms, and increases brand awareness.
  • Build effective and scalable recruitment systems and processes. Build upon our early investments to ensure that The Primary School’s talent acquisition can effectively scale alongside the organization. Collaborate across The Primary School team to support process improvements and share best practices to meet recruiting needs.
  • Work seamlessly and cross functionally with the Talent team. Integrate with HR functions, performance management, professional development, and manager training as it pertains to talent acquisition and retention. There is potential for this role to manage direct reports in the future as the Talent team grows.

ABOUT YOU

  • You have at least four years of full-cycle recruiting experience. You have demonstrated success in advanced sourcing, networking, and candidate research. You comfortably navigate competing priorities, exhibit executive presence, and are meticulously organized (and have the calendar to prove it).
  • You love to find the best talent. You’re constantly thinking about what the organization needs and who could fill it, and know that the ideal candidate might not necessarily be looking for a job. You seek out new networks and cultivate old ones (even in your free time; you can’t help it!), and continue to explore tools, resources and strategies that will expand your reach.
  • You treat everyone like a client. Whether it’s the candidate, the hiring manager, a TPS family, or local community partner, you aim to deliver an experience that is representative of The Primary School’s values and principles, because you know that every interaction speaks to who we are. On many days you are the first and only impression that a person will have of The Primary School, and you strive to live up to that privilege.
  • You are a builder of authentic relationships. Whether it’s with staff, parents, or community partners, you can engage with a variety of individuals and speak in a clear and compelling manner about specific roles and the organization’s goals and priorities.
  • You have strong organizational and project management skills. You can execute across multiple priorities, and effectively communicate in verbal and written form to all levels across the organization.
  • You are energized by growing a new organization and understand that it is no easy task. You know that being a one-man recruitment show is a challenge, but you have a strong perspective on how to get, keep and grow talent, and you’ve been craving the opportunity to show that it can be done. You know how to generate new ideas and have the hard skills to get those ideas off the ground.
  • You embrace diversity and engage confidently across differences. You believe that differences in race, culture, gender, age, background, and experiences enrich our community, and know how to bridge those differences with grace and humility.
  • You are kind, humble, and collaborative. You bring a positive attitude to every interaction and always see the best in others. You have the courage to step out of your comfort zone. You have an open mind and a thirst to learn and improve, and you can’t help but wonder what it would be like to work in an environment where every door is open and feedback is second nature.

A Plus If

  • You have previous experience working with schools and nonprofits, particularly in the education, health, and social services spaces.
  • You have experience supporting human resources functions.
  • You are an East Palo Alto, Belle Haven, or Hayward native and/or have experience working with a community similar to these.
  • You speak fluent Spanish.

COMPENSATION

Compensation is commensurate with qualifications and experience, plus excellent health benefits, 401k retirement plan, and generous paid time off, including a competitive paid parental leave benefit.
