Senior Human Resources Manager (San Mateo, CA)

IXL Learning, a leading edtech company with products used by 12 million students worldwide, has an exciting opportunity available for a Human Resources Manager to grow with us as our 500+ person company continues to expand.

The Senior Human Resources Manager will report to the VP HR and partner with senior management and other leaders by providing consultative advice and guidance on a wide range of HR issues. The ideal candidate will be able to quickly establish credibility and trust with the local management team and employees serving as go-to-resource for the team. Key focus areas are employee relations, engagement, compliance, talent management and development.


  • Provide support and guidance to HR generalists, management, and other staff when complex, specialized, and sensitive questions and issues arise; may be required to administer and execute routine tasks in certain circumstances.
  • Develop and monitor overall HR strategies, systems, policies and procedures across the organization with the goal of continual improvement and promoting a healthy and positive work environment
  • Manage and resolve complex employee relations issues. Conduct effective, thorough and objective investigations.
  • Lead implementation of projects and process improvement activities related to employment legislation, HR systems, practices, procedures and compliance.
  • Provide consultation, guidance and coaching to managers to address employee behavior and performance concerns; provide guidance and assist with the development and delivery of appropriate feedback or corrective/disciplinary actions.
  • Diagnose organizational issues, and partner with VP HR to develop solutions, and implement action plans at a local level
  • Participate in the design and implementation of programs that build employee engagement and retention
  • Partner with leaders to identify risks and/or exposure to the business related to people strategy and advise on recommended solutions
  • Stay current on best industry practices that can be applied and/or implemented within the organization and maintain knowledge of legal requirements related to day-to-day management of employees, reducing legal risks and ensuring regulatory compliance


  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience and progressive responsibility in human resources, talent management, and/or organizational development
  • Prior people management experience required
  • Experience in managing HR for a multi-state organization
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Very high degree of discretion and confidentiality
  • Experience in a dynamic, fast-paced environment
  • Strong technical proficiency with HR systems, G-suite and MS Office tools
  • Willing to roll up one's sleeves and perform tactical work
  • Excellent problem solving, judgment and decision making skills
  • Organization and project management skills along with very strong attention to detail
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, managers and vendors; strong team player
  • SPHR or SCP preferred
