Senior Editor, EL/ELA Temp (12 months)

The Senior Editor will be responsible for contributing to the ideation and execution of English learner support in our Reading/ELA programs. The successful candidate is a creative, hands-on person who can work closely across functional groups s (editorial, design, production, etc.) to develop a strong product model and solve the problems required to deliver it on time and within budget. The ideal candidate is a life-long learner who is collaborative, proactive, highly organized, and passionate about supporting teams in creating high-quality instruction.


  • Working in cross-functional teams to help define content
  • Generating and reviewing sample content and instructional language to support prototyping and guidelines creation
  • Operates effectively even as projects, priorities and assignments shift with the needs of the organization 
  • Provides recommendations for solutions to small-to-medium editorial/ project challenges
  • Comfortable with some degree of uncertainty; able to bring clarity to situations with minor-to-medium degrees of ambiguity
  • Beginning to develop a more flexible mindset, open to new ideas and willing to adapt when plans change, considering more than one factor, which could include pedagogy, print and/or digital constraints, and/or market demands
  • Interacts daily with editorial team to share and develop knowledge, ask questions, and seek guidance to complete tasks
  • May support Editor and Associate Editor in completing their tasks
  • Collaborates with cross-functional team to share pedagogical knowledge and collaborate on lesson development tasks
  • Attends relevant meetings and participates in editorial debrief sessions

What we’re looking for:

  • Solid understanding of reading domains (PA, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary, Comprehension) and how English learners process and acquire/ learn language
  • Working knowledge about instructional content development for target audience (K-2, 3-5, or 6-8 grade bands)
  • Knowledgeable about reading and ELD/EL-specific standards, guidelines, and best practices; educational trends, key issues, and competitive products in the assigned product area
  • Some understanding of editorial project management and ideally, some Agile software development processes experience

We’d also love to see:

  • Experience as a classroom teacher or district-level administrator working with English learners
  • Proficiency in language(s) other than English, particularly Spanish, Haitian Creole, Arabic, Vietnamese, or Mandarin
  • Experience working on products for state textbook adoptions

Core Focus

  • Key contributor to the development of imbedded, integrated and EL-specific supports
  • Support in drafting writing guidelines/specifications


  • Receives most work assignments from Supervising Editor and completes them with minimal-to-moderate degree of oversight
  • May also be responsible for day-to-day ownership of own projects, lessons, or initiatives, including ones of medium size, and may define work for others, monitoring and providing feedback on their work 


  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • 3+ years of experience writing and/or editing lessons and reading passages, crafting scope and sequences, and creating instructional support pieces at a school district, and/or publisher

Leadership Experience

  • Some experience working with cross-functional team members
  • Experience giving clear feedback to writers and editors during a digital lesson writing process
