Senior Director of Technical Delivery

About the Role

The Senior Director of Technical Delivery will be in charge of managing technical build efforts for our organization in order to ensure the successful delivery. This will require creative problem solving, strong technical project management, and significant collaboration with many teams both within the organization and with 3rd party outsourcing firms to manage key stakeholders and balance the conflicting trade-offs between deadlines, resources, quality and scope. This role will ultimately facilitate the smooth and effective transition of these build efforts to our production tech team that separately manages on-going maintenance and minor enhancements. Additionally, this role will serve as a member of the program leadership which is responsible for initiating efforts, following their progress and performance, and managing the overall health and culture of teams within the organization.

This role will lead the effort among internal workers and outside vendors, as well as develop effective schedules and suggest action items that still need to be complete to successfully complete the project. As a senior staff member you’ll be expected to operate independently, though your day-to-day will involve leading, learning and working with various teams to create, support, and deploy production applications. This role will lead a team of Business Analysts and/or Delivery Managers

What You Would Do

  • Work as part of a program leadership and management team, to ensure that New Classrooms technical solutions are effectively delivered, aligned to the overall strategy, and deliver value to the schools and communities we serve. Solutions should be technically viable, robust, and aligned to architectural principles and standards
  • Lead the efforts among internal teams and external vendors to deliver products on schedule and suggest action items required to successfully complete projects
  • Lead the transition of solutions and design to outsourced build partners and back into internal production environments where applicable
  • Manage a cross-functional delivery team of Business Analysts and/or Delivery Managers, with focus on technical excellence and high-performance culture
  • Train, coach and mentor team members
  • Support and deliver IT and Technology Development Strategy
  • Support architectural shift to a service oriented model
  • Ensure adherence to coding and development standards when applicable, ensuring solutions are suitably assured and of quality
  • Ensure that technology solutions are fit-for-purpose and aligned with architectural principles, standards and roadmaps
  • Consider the financial impact of technology solutions, with a view to delivering value
  • Provide technical leadership and innovation across all aspects of technology development
  • Develop and maintain effective ways of working throughout the department and organization
  • Provide support and mentoring to technical team leads, including talent and succession planning Lead and manage technical delivery resources.
  • Manage cross-functional delivery of new products and features with focus on technical excellence and high-performance culture
  • Responsible for technical design and implementation of software solutions for APIs and services Maintain detailed application and domain knowledge to support technical teams, as appropriate
  • Responsible for quality of solutions delivered, ensuring that appropriate development standards are maintained and followed, including compliance with required standards for technology development and data protection
  • Oversee external vendor management

What We Are Looking For

  • Experience managing the build, testing, and deployment of high quality, highly reliable, scalable application servers and APIs in a team environment
  • Ability to build resilience and responsiveness in the organization by being open and honest about challenges, and the actions required to address unexpected developments
  • Ability to juggle a multitude of projects simultaneously, large or small
  • Experience with software development project and documentation tools such as JIRA, Asana, and Confluence
  • Experience in services architecture, preferably with experience in transition to service-based approach
  • Familiarity with SQL
  • Knowledge of and comfort with multiple project management methodologies (waterfall, agile, lean, scrum, kanban, etc.) and ability to adapt them to the realities of different workstreams
  • Extraordinary attention to detail
  • Excellent written, verbal, and visual communication skills
  • Nice to have: experience with JavaScript, Python, Django, PostgreSQL

Role Classification, Benefits & Location

This role is full-time and includes benefits such as rich medical, dental, and vision insurance, 36 paid days off per year (prorated for the period in which you work), paid parental leave, a professional development budget of $375 annually and a quarterly cell phone subsidy. Although there is a preference for this role to be based in NYC when our office reopens, we are open to the role being remote for the right candidate.
