The Opportunity

The Senior Director of Science, Technology, and Math (STEM) will lead math and science content instruction, assessment and professional development to drive academic achievement and college readiness. The Senior Director will report to the Chief of Teaching and Learning Labs and work in close partnership with KIPP Foundation colleagues and KIPP network leaders, to support KIPP leaders and teachers in their daily work.

As this is a new area for the KIPP Foundation, we are seeking a Science founder who can bring a passion for science and an entrepreneurial drive. This role represents a unique opportunity for a unique candidate. The idea candidate could bring strong K-12 Math content expertise with less science content expertise yet amplified by a passion and motivation for science and growth. Excellent management acumen and a passion, motivation for science. Alternatively, the candidate could be one with strong Science content expertise with less math knowledge.

K-12 Math and Science content and strategy

The Senior Director will lead and oversee the following:

  • Develop and refine instructional vision and strategies.
  • Develop and/or source curriculum and assessment and professional development aligned with CCSS/NGSS and optimized to be implementable at scale.
  • Ensure that all content and PD support is adopted and effectively implemented by schools and regions.
  • Collect feedback from the network so that content and support meet needs and drive academic achievement.
  • Continuously monitor, track and analyze student achievement data in order to drive future content development, support and strategy.

In executing the above priorities, the Senior Director will:

Lead the current Foundation math team (2 Math Achievement Directors).

Become the founding K-12 science director as content expert and community leader.

The Senior Director of STEM will be required to travel frequently (~35%)

The location of this role can be based remotely or in any of our four offices: Chicago, New York, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C. with NYC preferred. This is a full-time, exempt position.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree required.
  • Minimum of 6+ years of math or science teaching experience with some high school teaching and/or curriculum experience required.
  • Understanding of K-12 science curriculum / pedagogy continuum and working knowledge of current research and promising practices in instruction especially CCSS.
  • 3+ years of experience in leading and managing teams. Ability to function as a catalyst, coach, and doer, guiding people at all levels of the organization by utilizing a facilitative approach and advancing the learning and development of others.
  • 3+ years of successful project management experience with demonstrated ability to appropriately scope projects and work plans and to allocate resources accordingly.
