Job Summary

We are looking for an experienced, innovative, and collaborative Senior Director of Online Learning. This inaugural position, reporting to the Founding Executive Director of the Center for Academic Innovation and Associate Vice Provost, is based in Ann Arbor, Michigan and is primarily responsible for helping faculty to adopt an integrated online education strategy and to launch thriving online learning programs that extend U-M's mission. You will lead an interdisciplinary approach to expanding our global impact through learning innovation and design that integrates the full set of strengths of the institution's schools and faculty and to align with educational and credentialing needs of learners. Responsibilities*

  • Set Strategy: Collaborate with stakeholders to build and deliver a long-term, University-wide strategy for online learning. Be an expert in the field and strengthen our ability to transform and inspire change in academic departments.
  • Provide Counsel: Lead partnerships with schools and colleges that build our online learning capacity and increase the reach and impact of open and online learning programs. Challenge conventional wisdom through a partnership approach.
  • Ensure High-Quality: Support and launch online learning programs that use our expertise and services.
  • Drive Growth and Sustainability: Support a culture that fosters our ability to excel and improve upon online and hybrid initiatives. Evaluate new opportunities, develop go-to-market strategies, and partner with others in the online learning space to produce revenue.
  • Lead Organizational and Team Development: Lead four teams responsible for delivering online learning and services to academic units. Ensure a culture befitting a high-growth group to achieve operational, collaboration and communication goals.
  • Advise University Leadership: Present to and provide advisory support for senior university academic and administrative leadership.
  • Evaluate Resource Allocation and Investment Strategies: Manage and invest our funds to support new programs and initiatives. Review, adjust, and carry forward all necessary financial and operational measures to ensure achievement of these goals.
  • Stewardship: Support a culture that fosters inclusivity, expands access to U-M educational offerings, and promotes student and faculty success.
  • Lead within Academic Innovation: Work with leaders to integrate our online learning strategy with educational data, research, educational technology, XR and operations teams.

Required Qualifications*

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree required.
  • 7+ years of experience in an online learning field including time in a strategic leadership or managerial role
  • 3+ years supervising professional staff and managing budgets
  • Applied experience implementing a strategic vision through an effective operating model
  • Expert proficiency managing new postsecondary (or equivalent) online learning programs and consulting with faculty/leadership on learning technology solutions
  • Experience in a complex organization building partnerships with diverse groups of individuals, gaining their support and commitment
  • Functional expertise related to the evaluation, assessment, and recommendation of educational technology-related products and systems
  • Passion for diversity, equity and inclusion in a workplace environment.

Additional Information

This is not a remote position and any adjustments to a standard in-person schedule will be discussed during the hiring process.

Must have legal authorization to work in the United States.

The salary for this position will be based upon the selected candidate’s education and experience.
