Innovate Public Schools

Innovate Public Schools (Innovate) is a nonprofit organization focused on ensuring that all Bay Area students, including low-income students and students of color, receive an excellent education. By providing cutting-edge leadership development programs to reform-minded charter schools, charter management organizations, and school districts, Innovate is striving to ensure that every student across the Bay Area has access to a world-class school.

Innovate offers several different programs to achieve this common goal: a world-class public schools for every student in the Bay Area. Innovate identifies and incubates Entrepreneurs-in-Residence, who are experienced school leaders in the process of designing and launching new networks of innovative, high-performing charter schools in the Bay Area. Innovate develops current and aspiring leaders through the Start-Up Schools Fellowship, a year-long leadership development and school design program aimed to create and sustain excellent schools with a particular emphasis on students of color and low-income students. Innovate also supports the design and implementation of high quality leadership development systems across charter networks, the redesign and transformation of struggling schools, and conducts intensive school audits focused on improving management, instruction, and culture.

School-Innovator-in-Residence Opportunity

Now Innovate, in collaboration with Silicon Schools Fund, is launching our new School Innovator-in-Residence program in 2018 to support the development of school leaders who will be ready to design, launch, and/or lead innovative schools across the Bay Area. This program provides up to a three-year paid Fellowship designed to provide a rising school leader with the support they will need to create and launch a school of excellence or to lead and foster innovation at one of our partner schools.

This program is most suitable for a school dean, assistant principal, or lead teacher who has a proven track record of driving results with low-income students and/or students of color.

Priority for this program will be given to individuals of diverse backgrounds to represent the communities their schools will serve and who have a passion and capacity to design and launch new, innovative schools. During the end of the residency year, the leader will be placed at a high performing Bay Area school. After residency, innovators-in-residence have multiple pathways to continue their leadership development.

Ideally, the candidate will apply to be an Innovate Entrepreneur-in-Residence and will be put on a 2-year timeline to design and launch a new, innovative school or CMO in one of Innovate’s core geographies, with financial support from Silicon Schools Fund and Innovate Public Schools.

However, if that is not the right fit, then the candidate will either:

  • Apply to be a school leader at an Innovate/Silicon Schools Fund partner school, or
  • Apply to be a school leader at schools outside of our partner schools, or
  • Open their own new school outside of Innovate’s key geographical region

School-Innovators-in-Residence will have proven track records as school leaders or teachers in achieving significant academic gains with high needs populations like low-income students, English language learners and students of color. Additionally they will have the mindsets and capacity to coach and lead others in a high-performing school. They will also need to possess the passion and curiosity to design an innovative school model that meets all students’ needs.

Innovate’s School-Innovators-in-Residence must demonstrate a commitment to the following best practices and principles of successful, equitable, innovative schools:

  • Academic rigor. Schools across the country are making the transition to the Common Core. In the best schools, this is far more than lip service. The rigor of texts and questioning are consistently high, students are learning mathematical concepts and application (vs. just rote learning), and students are taking on responsibility for much more of the learning (vs. being very teacher-centric).
  • Personalized learning. Our partnership schools will be models of using innovative instructional models that tap the groundswell of educational technology and software to dramatically improve how we individualize instruction to meet each students’ needs. The best schools are able to innovate on different ways to teach or use time and resources, and then apply them systematically in their schools if they yield benefits for students.
  • Parent leadership and political engagement. In order to create many more great schools for thousands of children, education reform leaders, including charter school leaders, must be engaged in the local political arena. Innovate will bring its vast experience in parent organizing and grassroots politics to help our School-Innovators-in-Residence understand how to maximize parent leadership and community engagement.
  • Operational excellence. The best schools “sweat the details” about instructional and operational issues, and create school-wide systems to ensure consistency in execution. These schools will be designed for replication, with clear written plans about all key programmatic, finance, and operational issues.
