Say Yes Guilford (SYG), founded in 2015, is a 501c3 nonprofit organization based in Guilford County, North Carolina, with the mission of providing access to services, support, and scholarships designed to prepare local students for success in college, career, and life. In July 2018 SYG became the first locally owned and operated chapter of the national nonprofit Say Yes to Education.

The organization is guided by its theory of change, which can be summarized as the following:

  • The organization will coordinate a suite of targeted student support services that are customized and responsive to the specific needs of each student across Guilford County Schools;
  • The two-year proof point – along with sufficient community leadership advocating on behalf of all students will result in the necessary private and public financial support to scale the resources required for all GCS students to receive the supports that they need to improve their individual outcomes;
  • Scaling of student supports will enable sufficient access across the district and result in improved student outcomes at the district-wide level;
  • Improved individual, school-wide, and district-wide student outcomes – coupled with access to scholarships - will enable students to get to and through rigorous career pathways and post-secondary educational opportunities.

To achieve this theory of change, Say Yes Guilford will:

  • Build upon the distribution of post-secondary scholarships to students who graduate from Guilford County high schools;
  • Coordinate a suite of targeted student support services that are customized and responsive to the specific needs of each student across Guilford County schools;
  • Utilize and implement a temporary technology platform to enable schools and service providers to assess, target, and track the provision of academic and non-academic support services and report these findings to the public; and
  • Develop and implement an effective communications strategy to keep local policymakers, school leaders, community partners, and the general public up to date on its activities.


Say Yes Guilford’s Executive Director will be an effective leader and experienced fundraiser, with experience in the field of education and specific knowledge of how to partner with school districts. This individual will execute the vision of the Board and two-year business plan, with the opportunity to shape the future vision of this initiative to meet established programmatic, fundraising, and financial sustainability goals. This individual will be a proven collaborator and experienced change agent, capable of mobilizing broad coalitions including school district leaders, SYG board members, funders, county commissioners, policymakers, and program partners. This is an ideal opportunity for an impassioned advocate who is ready to lead a robust K-16 student achievement initiative in Guilford County, ensuring that families throughout the county have access to high-quality services and college financing that can dramatically support improving their academic outcomes.


  • Overseeing the execution of vision, values, and goals designed to provide support high-quality college access and education program supports to students in Guilford County;
  • Establishing strong, trustworthy, and collaborative working relationships with county and city governments, school districts, non-profit providers, philanthropic partners, families, and the community-at-large;
  • Identifying and motivating a group of dedicated volunteers to support local fundraising, communications, and community engagement efforts;
  • Serving as the public face of Say Yes Guilford, interacting with leaders of the school district (including central office staff and principals), local families, county commissioners, and programs as well as other key stakeholders;
  • Leading the organization in goal setting and achieving measurable outcomes, including developing annual priorities and targets with a broad group of local stakeholders;
  • With the Board, developing and executing on long-term fundraising and financial sustainability plan, including the provision of resources to support college scholarships, scholarship administration, general operations, and investment in scaling targeted program services;
  • Working with the Board to effectively communicate with the general public Say Yes Guilford’s theory of change, key strategies, and progress on its initiatives;
  • Confronting racial and economic inequities directly in both leadership and program implementation.


In order to fulfill these responsibilities, the ideal Executive Director candidate will be:

  • An accomplished leader with a track record of success, familiarity with public school systems, and a deep commitment to ensuring that all children and families can access the opportunities they deserve.
  • Inspiring in his or her management style; one who sees the possibility in all adults and is willing to devote time to coach and develop them while holding them accountable to measurable results.
  • Culturally competent and a self-reflective leader who understands the effects of race, class, ethnicity, income, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, and other issues of difference in society and is able to lead direct conversations about them.
  • Skilled in strategic planning, project management, and data analysis; able to focus on big-picture priorities while not losing sight of the details.
  • Systems thinker who understands local constituencies, partners, the program framework, and policy considerations.
  • A sound fiscal manager who has a high level of ethics around accounting practices and is successful in budgeting and financial planning.
  • A builder of authentic relationships with community partners, policymakers, faith community leaders, funders, and other supporters; able to engage with a variety of individuals and speaks in a clear and compelling manner about the organization’s goals and priorities.
