San Carlos Charter Learning Center, Executive Director

San Carlos Charter Learning Center - San Carlos, California - Full time

ORGANIZATION

Founded over twenty-five years ago, San Carlos Charter Learning Center (SCC) is the oldest charter school in California. The school was created by educators and parents, opening with 85 learners in 1993; there are around 350 learners enrolled today across grades K-8. SCC’s mission is to be a collaborative public K-8 charter school community that educates, nurtures and inspires learners to be independent thinkers as well as socially and personally responsible citizens. The school features multi-age classrooms and uses an interdisciplinary, non-textbook based curriculum that features multiple learner-centered resources, project-based and hands-on experiences. All members of the community value and maintain strong relationships; these deep connections are apparent in interactions between parents, educators, and learners at all levels. OPPORTUNITY

With the retirement of founding staff member and long-time Executive Director Stacy Emory next summer, the SCC Board is seeking a new leader to support the school as it moves forward into its next chapter. They are seeking someone who can: maintain the school’s strong project-based instructional program and social-emotional curriculum; retain and develop high-quality educators and staff; partner closely with the board to ensure their effective governance and stewardship of the school; and support all members of this deeply committed and connected community with an emphasis on respect and inclusion.

The ideal candidate will be an experienced school leader who has a track record of ensuring that students receive high-quality experiences in an innovative, collaborative environment. They will be able to build enduring, authentic connections with all stakeholders (learners, educators, staff, parents, board members, district leaders). They will be able to balance the urgency of problem-solving in the moment with the need to ensure the maintenance of strong systems so the school can run efficiently over the long-term. They will be an exceptional people manager who inspires those who work for them, helping identify their areas of growth and opportunities to support them in their professional development.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Executive Director will be in charge of the day-to-day management of the school, including:

  • Maintaining the school’s learner-centered resource and project-based academic program and serving as the “Educator in Chief” by working with teachers to set instructional goals and priorities (and metrics for their measurement);
  • Developing and maintaining strong relationships with all school stakeholders (learners, educators/staff, parents, board members), ensuring transparent lines of communication at all times, and addressing issues and concerns in a timely and constructive manner;
  • Ensuring that all teachers and staff continue to understand their priorities and are receiving regular feedback, support, and evaluation of their progress and areas for development;
  • Building learner support systems that provide adequate services to meet learners’ academic and social-emotional needs, including developing and staffing these functions appropriately and measuring results to ensure their effectiveness;
  • Overseeing the front and back-office staff to ensure that all operations issues, including finance, facilities, human resources, learner record-keeping, and compliance, are managed efficiently and professionally;
  • Continuing the school’s strong relationship with the San Carlos School District and other public agencies.

In addition, the Executive Director will:

  • Work with other stakeholders to evolve the vision for the academic program as reflected in the school’s mission, collaborating with the Board of Directors to support this vision and ensure it has adequate resources;
  • Lead community initiatives to continue building a sense of equity and inclusion within the school while maintaining a strong sense of community among learners, staff, and parents.

QUALIFICATIONS

In order to meet their responsibilities, the ideal Executive Director candidate will be:

  • A passionate advocate for all learners and families who has a commitment to building a strong culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion at SCC;
  • An exceptional relationship builder who can quickly gain the confidence of the board, educators/staff, learners and parents;
  • A proven instructional leader, with classroom experience, in a high-quality school who is knowledgeable about innovative, experiential, and project-based instruction;
  • An accomplished professional and experienced manager who knows how to recruit, coach, and develop teachers and staff at all levels;
  • Knowledgeable about the academic and social-emotional needs of learners, and special education service and compliance, especially those at different grade levels and with varying academic and social-emotional needs;
  • Dynamic and versatile, able to engage a variety of stakeholders in dialogue, actively listen to concerns, and speak in a clear, compelling and authentic manner both about the school’s goals and priorities and the leader’s decision-making process and plans towards meeting them;
  • Experienced in school finance and decision-making around resource allocation for a learner-serving organization (background working with public school budgeting preferred);
  • Bachelor’s degree required; CA administrator credential preferred.
