About the PositionThere is an emerging “second level digital divide” in US schools, which is fueled by major differences in how technology is being utilized to advance teaching and learning. Digital Promise is supporting fifty U.S. middle schools with a full time technology and learning coach and additional support that will enable teachers to more powerfully use technology for learning.

Digital Promise is seeking a Research Associate to support research aspects of the project including instrument development, data collection, data analysis, and reporting. The Research Associate will work closely with senior Digital Promise Research staff to implement a mixed-methods approach to identify and understand effective coaching and leadership practices for enabling teachers to more powerfully use technology for learning. Additionally, the Research Associate will help collect, clean, analyze, and share data on an ongoing basis to inform and improve the project. The ideal candidate will have passion for education, experience collecting and analyzing qualitative and quantitative data, and demonstrated research communication skills.

  • Support the design and administration of pre and post surveys to academic coaches, principals, and teachers.
  • Conduct qualitative analysis of interview and focus group data
    • Manage transcription of interviews and focus groups.
    • Use qualitative data analysis software to identify and categorize content from transcripts and open-ended survey responses, and create a mechanism for non-researchers to easily find and harvest quotes for communications purposes.
    • Analyze artifacts in a variety of media, including video, audio, images, text and graphical, to support development of case studies.
  • Manage databases and prepare (clean, etc.) quantitative data files so they are ready for analysis.
  • Conduct descriptive and multivariate quantitative data analysis.
  • Contribute to comprehensive interim and final reports of research findings that may be published or presented at conferences to share with the academic community.
  • Contribute to blog posts, infographics, data visualizations, and Q&As that accurately and effectively communicate research topics and findings to a non-academic audience.
  • Coordinate data collection and research-related activities with participating schools.
  • Work closely with Digital Promise Research team to support data collection and analysis for other Digital Promise initiatives, as needed.


  • Bachelors degree in educational technology, psychology, research methods, education policy, public policy, economics, or a related discipline with strong research emphasis. Graduate degree preferred.
  • 2+ years experience conducting research in education, technology, or social sciences field such as economics.
  • Experience in both qualitative and quantitative data analysis methods and software packages (SPSS, R, NVivo, Dedoose).
  • Strong writing skills, including the ability to communicate complex/technical information for public audiences.
  • A demonstrated ability to learn about new topics quickly.
  • Experience managing research partnerships with school preferred.
