Position Overview: TLA is searching for a new member to join our dynamic nonprofit as Partner or Managing Partner to lead our Research and Measurement programs work. Reporting directly to our Chief of Strategy and Programs, this leader will work across our team and alongside diverse collaborators in the K-12 educational space to build ecosystem capacity to generate, translate, and disseminate data and information to improve collective outcomes in the education field.

Through developing and leading a portfolio of strategic initiatives while partnering with others at TLA to integrate research and measurement expertise across the organization, the team member will:

  • Lead, improve, iterate, and expand upon TLA’s existing research and measurement projects, including our research partnerships and measurement fellowship;
  • Manage the ongoing process to identify critical questions to be addressed by TLA’s annual learning agenda, engaging stakeholders within and outside of the organization to articulate field-level learning needs;
  • Ensure research and measurement expertise is infused across our work and that TLA’s guidance is consistently and meaningfully connected to the existing evidence base;
  • Provide guidance to ensure schools and systems have strategies in place to use data to understand what’s working and what’s not in innovation and improvement;
  • Monitor, make sense of, and help the field understand the emerging evidence for innovative school and system approaches to teaching and learning;
  • Build partnerships across the field that amplify and bridge work being done; and,
  • Uphold TLA’s professional brand and reputation while interacting with all levels of staff, board members, and external stakeholders across the education and philanthropic sectors.

Position Location: TLA is a national remote organization; staff work flexibly from locations of their choosing. Occasional (up to 20%) travel to represent TLA on the national stage and to participate in team events is required.

Key Responsibilities: Key initial responsibilities upon entry will include:

Evolve existing programmatic initiatives and build new efforts to achieve Research and Measurement strategic goals (30%)

  • Work with the senior leadership team to develop an evidence plan to assess progress against our 2020 learning agenda and help conceptualize and develop a process for evolving it.
  • Carry forward existing programmatic initiatives, such as TLA’s one-year research fellowship, and propose new approaches to enhance the impact and sustainability of these initiatives.
  • In close partnership with the leadership team, identify new programmatic partnerships and opportunities aligned with TLA’s strategic goals for research and measurement, which includes a focus on building the capacity of schools and systems to measure the impact of their work.
  • Demonstrate ultimate accountability for execution and refinement of the research and measurement strategy, with metrics focused on student learning, directly or indirectly.
  • Exhibit exemplary external stakeholder management, building deep knowledge and field relationships in line with TLA’s role and responsibility as an ecosystem intermediary.

Advise the creation of resources, tools, and relationships to drive greater knowledge and application of evidence and learning science to advance practice change (30%)

  • Establish content plan and priorities for helping TLA translate research insights into practical and actionable resources for practitioners, such as building from TLA’s pilot IgnitED Research series and advancing new ways to build evidence use in practice.
  • Partner effectively with other leaders within and beyond TLA, infusing a research and measurement perspective into the knowledge, tools, and networks focused on advancing innovative approaches to education.
  • Exhibit a learning orientation, adapting tools and resources as needed in response to insights from educators, practitioner learning experts, and user data.

Lead projects to increase school and system measurement capacity (30%)

  • Develop and provide strategic guidance to school and system leaders to help them build capacity to learn and improve as well as answer critical questions about emerging practices.
  • Lead all aspects of current and future demonstration projects with district partners (such as our partnership with Lindsay Unified School District), including research design and analysis, creation of research reports and other communications and project and relationship management.
  • Deliver the highest level of service to TLA’s district partners.
  • Manage TLA’s part-time research staff, overseeing all aspects of work and positioning discrete tasks and deliverables in relation to the overall project plan and goals.
  • Partner with TLA’s External Relations team to share actionable insights from demonstration projects with the rest of the ecosystem.

Serve as a thought leader and advisor at the national level (10%)

  • Leverage relationships and research and measurement expertise to engage in thought leadership activities aimed at building field coherence, connecting research and practice, and disseminating learnings to the ecosystem.

  • Deep understanding and empathy for practitioner needs, humility, and a passion for helping others understand and translate research through practical and actionable insights and tools.
  • Strong strategic thinking and communications skills, with the ability to translate objectives into clear and compelling programmatic initiatives and priorities.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills -- including strong ability to communicate in written and oral formats across a broad variety of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Energized by ensuring accuracy, thoroughness, and excellence, with an eye towards improving quality and making the organization better.
  • Ability to tactfully, proactively, and professionally prioritize conflicting needs to manage projects to successful completion with high quality, often with deadline pressures and competing needs.
  • Passion for TLA’s mission to improve learning and alignment with our core values.
  • Experience and/or comfort with remote work.
  • Advanced training or commensurate practical leadership in research and measurement, program evaluation, and/or the learning sciences.

Compensation and Benefits: This is a full-time, salaried position with competitive benefits and the opportunity to work in a flexible, culture-focused professional environment. Compensation and title is commensurate with skills and experience.
