The opportunity

As our dedicated Research Analyst/Associate, you will have the opportunity to be part of multiple research projects as part of the organization’s growing research team. As part of our research team, you will support in creating impact metrics, identifying best practice school-family engagement, collecting surveys and analyzing results, conducting rigorous impact evaluation study, and developing and evaluating research-driven product features. For example, you will analyze large-scale (100M+) conversation data between educators and families across the U.S. K-12 schools and conduct an evaluation study on estimating impact of TalkingPoints on student learning outcomes. This position offers a unique opportunity to utilize your data-analytics and research skills to be part of a non-profit organization with mission to drive student success by unlocking the potential of families to fuel their children’s learning, especially in under-resourced communities by building meaningful connections between schools, teachers and families through accessible technology.

You’ll be directly reporting to the Director of Research. As part of the research team, you’ll have many opportunities to collaborate with other teams (e.g. engineering, partnership, and product teams) as well. You will:

  • Support creating impact metrics and building dashboards
  • Support literature reviews, data cleaning, analysis, and modeling for impact evaluation research study
  • Support developing, piloting, and testing research-driven product features
  • Co-write research briefs, reports, presentations, and/or white papers summarizing the results and takeaways for internal and external audiences.
  • Support required data pulls for external partners, philanthropic funders and internal needs

Who you are

The ideal candidate will have most or all of the following:

  • A bachelor’s degree or higher in Education, Economics, Public Policy, Statistics, Data Science, or Computer science; or candidates with relevant experience will be evaluated commensurate with their education and experience
  • 2+ years experience in working with education data or time-stamped large data
  • 2+ years of relevant experience using tools such as SQL and Python/R to work efficiently at scale
  • 1+ years of relevant experience in data science/data mining/textual mining
  • Own end-to-end analysis from extracting the data, to running the appropriate model, to interpreting the results
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to work with cross functional, internal and external teams of technical and non-technical members
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced iterative environment
  • Strong team-player: we work as a small, tightly-knit team and you should be self-starting and motivated to build things and contribute ideas to the team
  • Experience and/or empathy with communities we serve (e.g., underserved populations, education, immigration, bilingual and/or multicultural environments)

Nice to haves

  • Experience in academic research with a track record of working independently and executing a research plan
  • 2+ years of relevant experience in ML/AI/NLP modeling and scaling up to large dataset
  • Experience with BI tools (e.g. Tableau, Amplitude, or Snowflake)
  • Experience working with an engineering team using tools like Github
  • Experience using cloud computing services (e.g AWS), Google NLP
