Reading Development Assistant

Amira Learning - Remote - Full time

We’re looking for a passionate, detail-oriented early literacy teacher to help create and test the content used by Amira to help kids learn to read.

Amira is bringing AI and the science of reading together to tackle the problem of early literacy. Amira is the first intelligent reading assistant. The software is able to listen to K-3 students read out loud, assess their mastery and deliver personalize, interactive tutoring. Created at Carnegie Mellon, led by senior managers from Renaissance Learning, deeply partnered with HMH, Amira is receiving recognition and acclaim as the next generation of edtech.

You will work with the team to ensure that Amira is accurately sounding out words, providing understandable definitions, helping students in the best way and otherwise delivering a great student experience. You do not need experience with software and technology to do this job, but you do need to be highly productive, able to work with tight deadlines and highly skilled as a reading instructor. This is a job where we are looking for the right person, not the right resume.

The Amira team is distributed. You can work where ever you like.  If desired, we pay for work space at shared office facilities like WeWork.

Duties and Responsibilities

Create Content

You will use standard tools like Word & Excel to create the content that Amira uses to work with children. This requires a great understanding of phonics, the characteristics of words and how to explain the meaning of words in children-friendly ways. A sense of humor and understanding of young kid's thought processes are essential.

Test The Software

You will sometimes act as a quality assurance reviewer of Amira, helping to spot problems in the way that the AI is delivering help.

Review Student Interactions

You will review Amira’s interactions with students and critique the AI’s decision-making. This process helps to drive improvement in Amira’s capacity to accelerate reading mastery.

Drive Product Improvement

As you make use of the software, you will aid the team by offering suggestions about how to make Amira better.

Work with Educators

Working with our Customer Success team, you will sometimes help with the implementations and training of teachers and educators using Amira.

Skills and Experience

This job is designed for a person with outstanding knowledge of early reading instruction and is ready to put that understanding to work to help millions of students.  Skills required:

Expert in reading instruction at the practitioner level;

Capable of focused concentration and high productivity in doing content production;

Willing to work very hard and deal with the deadlines and pressures of a start-up;

Insistent on high quality but able to make rapid decisions;

Highly collaborative and responsive with internal and external stakeholders;

Flexible and self-motivating, able to operate effectively with uncertainty and change;

Experience working with K-3 students, with experience as a teacher desirable;

Ability to create engaging content for children.

  • There will be only very occasional travel, but the ability to travel a few days a quarter is a requirement.
