Reading Content Specialist

Literably - Remote - Part time

Literably is a fast-growing edtech company on a mission to develop every child into a proficient reader. Our flagship product is an online elementary reading assessment. Using our product, K-8 students read aloud and answer questions on a device (Chromebook, iPad, laptop, desktop), and Literably generates key data for reading instruction that would otherwise be collected manually. This saves teachers enormous amounts of time and drives critical intervention decisions for young readers. We currently serve over 500 schools, including several of America’s largest school districts.

Literably is a mostly remote company. We have employees in San Francisco, New York, and Denver.

The role at a glance:

  • Part-time (at least 20 hours per week)
  • Temporary (Summer-Fall 2021)
  • Remote
  • Salary/pay rate: $25-35 per hour
  • Start date: asap

About the role:

The RCS will report directly to the Vice President of Customer Success. In this role, we are looking for a results-oriented individual with previous elementary school (or reading) teaching experience and/or experience working in the PreK-5 reading assessment field. Ideally, you are a self-starter who has a demonstrated track record of hitting and surpassing ambitious work-performance goals while working independently/remotely on a small team (10 or less people).

It is highly desirable, but not required, that the RCS be bilingual in Spanish and English.

The primary charge of the RCS will be to review, improve, and add to Literably’s library of assessments, which are composed of texts/text excerpts licensed from select national publishers. As the RCS, you will spearhead a variety of projects that will require an intermediate or above understanding of elementary reading instruction & assessment concepts (as well as best practices). To be successful, the RCS will need the ability to communicate effectively with publishers and internal stakeholders at Literably, analyze assessments across a variety of factors (e.g., fairness, diversity of content, difficulty, student performance data), and use their analyses to make and execute on recommendations to improve our assessments. It will be critical that the RCS have superb attention to detail, excellent oral and written communication skills, and the ability to own, organize, and drive multiple projects forward simultaneously with a high degree of autonomy.

Primary projects include but are not limited to:

  • Improve existing Literably assessments:
    • Review Literably’s existing assessments at different levels (level A, level B, and so on) using student performance data, customer feedback, and an understanding of appropriate reading elements, in order to identify assessments that should be placed on a different level (e.g., make a level A assessment a level B assessment) or removed from Literably.
    • Review assessments’ comprehension questions across a number of metrics (difficulty, ambiguity, content appropriateness), construct new comprehension questions aligned to Common Core Standards, and upload comprehension questions to the Literably interface.
    • Identify additional texts to add to Literably, with particular attention focused on culturally diverse stories and content, and communicate with publishers to get approval to license additional texts to Literably.
    • Help upload additional texts to the Literably interface and create high-quality comprehension questions for them.

Potential projects based on applicant’s background, skill set, and performance on primary projects:

  • Add decodable texts to Literably’s assessment library (may require an Advanced Degree (Master's, PhD) in a literacy-related field):
    • Evaluate a collection of decodable texts across a number of metrics (e.g., difficulty, content appropriateness) and identify high-quality texts that can be added to the Literably library of assessments.
    • Communicate with publishers to get approval to license those decodable texts to Literably.
    • Help upload these decodable texts to the Literably interface and create high-quality comprehension questions for them.
  • Spanish content project
    • Review publishers with whom we could potentially partner.
    • Contact publishers and agree on a tentative licensing fee.
    • Review texts and select appropriate excerpts.
    • License excerpts from publishers.
    • Write multiple-choice comprehension questions aligned to Common Core Standards.
    • Record audio for all questions and answer choices.
    • Upload texts and questions to Literably.
    • Test texts and questions to confirm everything is working.

Desired qualifications:

  • Bilingual in Spanish and English.
  • Advanced Degree (Master's, PhD) in a literacy-related field.
  • Passionate about reading, reading assessments, and the potential for edtech tools to help teachers and students in the classroom.
  • Deep understanding of reading concepts and best practices (e.g., phonics scaffolding, evaluating comprehension questions against Common Core reading standards, identifying inappropriate content and culturally diverse stories for students).
  • At least 2 years of full-time elementary teaching (or reading) experience and/or significant experience working in the PreK-5 reading assessment field.
  • Strategic project planner who can stay focused on the big picture but also specifically outline and manage goals, deliverables, timelines, and responsibilities for multiple parties.
  • Incredible attention to detail: You enjoy reading a list of directions/instructions and executing on them, and are naturally inclined to double-check that your work has been done correctly. You consistently document and follow up on “action items” and “next steps.
  • Quick learner and natural problem solver who can independently solve ambiguous problems with or without an internal playbook to help guide you.
  • Thrives in a fast-paced, remote environment, is an expert at juggling frequently shifting priorities, and is always on top of what items can never fall between the cracks.
