Over the next five years, Quill aims to help 10 million low-income students. The VP of Curriculum will enable Quill’s curriculum team to develop AI-powered learning experiences that enable millions of students to become stronger writers and critical thinkers.

About the VP of Curriculum Role

As the VP of Curriculum, your primary role will be managing the curriculum team and overseeing all curriculum planning, development, and maintenance. Quill has a team of six curriculum developers at the moment, and we aim to expand the team over the coming years as we develop and launch new curricular offerings. You will be joining the 30-person organization as a member of the leadership team and report to the Founder & Executive Director, Peter Gault.

In this role, you will work with the curriculum team and other leaders at Quill to define yearly and quarterly OKRs for the curriculum, track progress on these OKRs, and use your project management skills to ensure the team meets its ambitious goal despite a complex and often changing development process. As the curriculum team’s people manager, you will support each team member’s growth and learning at Quill by conducting weekly 1:1s and yearly performance evaluations. Quill staff members are provided with a $1500 annual PD budget, and you will help team members create and achieve professional development goals, ensuring that each person on the team is growing in their career.

Quill is at the forefront of using AI to help students become stronger writers. While this role requires no previous knowledge of AI development, you will be learning about and contributing to our AI development by helping to define what high-quality feedback looks like for students, building style guides that articulate our approach to feedback, and tracking how well our AI serves this feedback. Your pedagogical expertise and deep knowledge of best practices in literacy education will shape Quill’s approach to content, feedback, AI development, and new literacy tools. You will be responsible for ensuring that all Quill’s content meets a high standard of quality through designing and implementing quality assurance processes and developing a long-term strategy for maintaining a large library of content.

Responsibilities

Leadership and Team Management

  • Work closely with the executive director to set and implement the strategic vision of Quill’s curriculum and product.
  • Represent the curriculum team in leadership meetings, cross-team meetings, and meetings with Quill partners.
  • Manage a team of curriculum developers and product managers, cultivating a positive team culture that aligns with organizational values, promotes collaboration and respect, and boosts overall morale and effectiveness.
  • Hold weekly 1:1s with each team member to coach, support, and monitor progress toward growth goals, providing frequent and clear feedback that results in growth and career advancement.

Curriculum & AI Product Design

  • Lead the curriculum team in all content, curriculum, and pedagogy decisions, including style guidelines, feedback approaches, curricular and standards alignment, and activity design.
  • Manage collaboration with DEI experts to evaluate and improve content, style guidelines, and team practices, including our DEI framework for evaluating content.
  • Play a hands-on role in reviewing and evaluating the content, including identifying areas of improvement, reviewing the success of student sessions to inform big-picture product and curriculum improvements, and analyzing AI algorithms to improve feedback loops.
  • Collaborate with engineers, designers, and product managers to build content management systems to support content development.

Project Management

  • Set the team’s yearly goals and quality objectives to support the organization’s strategic vision and long-term goals.
  • Manage curriculum team projects by creating project plans and assigning tasks to the team in consideration of bandwidth, expertise, and interest.
  • Determine and track the team’s key performance indicators, providing biweekly status reports to the organization on team progress and goals.
  • Determine project and task priority and adjust/reprioritize as needed to ensure the highest priority goals are met.

Qualifications

  • 6+ years of experience developing curriculum offerings.
  • 3+ years of experience managing a team developing curriculum offerings.
  • Experience building culturally responsive teaching materials and knowledge of culturally responsive education pedagogy and practice.
  • Strong expository writing skills, with an expert knowledge of technical grammar or an aptitude for building this expertise.
  • Knowledge of strategies and best practices for teaching writing in grades 6-12.

The most successful candidate might have some of the following experience, skills, and competencies:

  • Previous classroom teaching experience
  • Experience managing complex projects
  • Strong spreadsheet skills or an aptitude for building data analysis skills quickly
  • Experience working with product managers and software engineers to develop edtech products

Job Details

We are a team of 30 working both in New York City and remotely. This is a full-time role either on-site in NYC or remote, with a preference for east-coast time zone. The salary range is $160,000-$220,000 and includes a full benefits package including Health, Dental, Vision Insurance (Aetna), 4% 401k Matching, 35 Days Paid Holidays & Paid Days Off (with unlimited sick leave), and a $1,500 professional development stipend annually.
