Project Editor

Center for the Collaborative Classroom - Alameda, California - Full time

Center for the Collaborative Classroom is a nonprofit, educational organization dedicated to providing continuous professional learning for teachers and curricula that support the academic, ethical, and social development in children.

The project editor manages editorial development of assigned projects, and develops editorial processes and styles, under the supervision of the managing editor. The editor works with program managers and curriculum developers to develop tone and editorial approach of materials and edits manuscript for substance, style, and correctness. The editor facilitates the art and design development processes, ensures timely communication of project information, and monitors schedules to ensure on-time delivery of projects.The editor must also be familiar with digital publishing processes and the tools associated with a digital workflow.

Responsibilities:

Manages the editorial development of a variety of projects that may be multi-year and multi-component (e.g., reprints, replacement lessons, marketing collateral)

Develops schedules and creative briefs

Performs manuscript editing tasks, from substantive editing of content to copy editing

Monitors rights and permissions in consultation with the director

Facilitates decisions about packaging and components

Ensures that projects stay on schedule

Hires and supervises copy editors, proofreaders, translators, fact checkers, and other freelance/contract staff as needed

Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in English, education, or a related field.

Professional development in editing, writing, or other aspects of publishing preferred.

5+ years experience in publishing required, with both project management and editing experience. Experience working in educational publishing and/or with a multi-component series is preferred.

Superior skills in a range of editing tasks, including substantive editing (developmental and/or content), copyediting, production editing, and proofreading

Thorough knowledge of The Chicago Manual of Style

Proficiency in using Word templates

COMPENSATION:This is a full-time position with a salary ranging from $63k - $67k annually DOE. Benefits package includes comprehensive medical, dental, vision plan. This is a term of contract position ending in December 2020. This is not a remote position.
