Professional Development Specialist

Position Summary

This position might be right for you. As a staff member at The Tech, you will join a world leader in the creation of immersive STEM education resources to develop the next generation of problem-solvers locally, nationally and globally.

The Professional Development Specialist (PD Specialist) will support engineering professional development and content development for The Tech Academies program, an in-depth professional development leadership program for teachers of Grades K-12 and after-school educators in low-income partner schools and districts in San Jose and South Santa Clara County.

This exempt position reports to the Sr. Director of Educational Partnerships and will primarily support the Mechanical Engineering component of The Tech Academies program. The PD Specialist will collaborate with team members at The Tech and educational partners to develop and deliver engineering professional development, coaching and instructional supports. The PD Specialist will assist Tech Academies participants as they integrate hands-on engineering and computational thinking into their classroom instruction and train other educators on the same. The PD Specialist will further ensure that work with our local communities is scaled through online instructional supports, conference presentations and connections to the broader education community.

Key Responsibilities

Tech Academies Program Content and Professional Development

Co-plan, develop and facilitate two-week Mechanical Engineering (ME) Summer Institute each July.

Coach, observe and co-present with Tech Academy participants in the delivery of engineering professional development to other educators at their schools, districts, organizations or at conferences.

Support coordination and implementation of observations of engineering lessons delivered with students at The Tech Interactive or with veteran Tech Academy participants.

Support coordination and implementation of observations of Tech Academy participants leading engineering professional development for other educators at their school or after-school sites.

Co-plan, co-develop and co-facilitate interactive mechanical engineering components of quarterly Community of Practice meetings for the broader Tech Academy network.

Support Tech Academy fellowship recruitment and enrollment each year.

Work with team to develop Summer Institute lessons and instructional supports for use at Community of Practice meetings and broader distribution.

Support Tech Academy participants with connections to engineering and computer science resources and as a thought partner as they implement engineering opportunities in their school and community.

Department Support

Attend and support STEM Pathways steering committee meetings and district convenings as needed.

Remain current on best practices and new research in implementing CA Computer Science Standards, NGSS, CCSS, gender equity, empathy and English Language Learner strategies.

Key Qualifications

Energetic, dynamic and creative individual who can be a strong advocate for The Tech’s mission and learning pedagogy, welcomes challenges and enjoys variety in their daily work functions.

Bachelor’s degree in education, science, engineering, computer science, math, technology or other relevant field or equivalent experience.

Minimum three years of experience developing and delivering professional development for educators K-12 in engineering or STEM. (Working with educators in both formal and informal settings a plus.)

Minimum five years of experience teaching diverse student populations in Grades K-12 in one or more of the following: formal classroom, museum/science center or afterschool program. Experience teaching at Title I schools a plus.

Prior experience in the design, training, and delivery of educational experiences with science/engineering content. Experience with project-based learning and STEM lesson development preferred. Experience with The Tech Academies or The Tech Challenge a plus.

Prior experience with the integration of real-life problem solving with the engineering design process and computational thinking. Experience adapting engineering instruction to a broad range of K-12 grade levels a plus.

Excellent public speaking, presentation and written communication skills and an understanding of how to facilitate professional growth in adult learners.

Proven ability to design and align curriculum and assessment materials with education standards and student-centered methods.

High interest in engineering design, computer science and technology.

Experience in instructional strategies that support gender equity, empathy and English Language Learners a plus.

Fluency in a second language is a plus.

Training in and experience with computer science and computational thinking integration with science as reflected in NGSS desired.

Experience developing classroom-ready, content-driven activities in programming languages such as Scratch, Python, Java and/or other languages a plus.

Exemplary customer service skills with internal and external audiences, including quick, consistent and professional responsiveness and follow-through.

Demonstrated PC literacy (Windows operating system, Microsoft Office suite, internet tools) and video conferencing applications.

Ability to multi-task projects and people and meet deadlines.

Willingness to work occasional weekend days plus some evenings. Must be available for Summer Institute, July 20 to 31, 2020.

Able to travel locally, regionally and, occasionally, nationally to partner sites and conferences, as required.
