Professional Development Specialist - Bowers Institute

Full time, Exempt Position

The Senior Professional Development Specialist position is a full-time, exempt position reporting to the Senior Director of The Bowers Institute @ The Tech. The Bowers institute offers online resources, lesson plans and professional development to support educators in developing the next generation of problem solvers.

The position’s overall responsibility is the development of written design challenge activities and lessons for teachers and out of school time educators, and the creation and delivery of (in-person and online) professional development on Design Challenge Learning (DCL) for educators locally, nationally and internationally. DCL engages students in an iterative design process as they solve relevant, real-world problems.

The Senior Professional Development Specialist is a core contributor to our strategic initiative to scale the Tech, supporting educators locally, nationally and internationally.

Responsibilities:

Develop and refine lessons, activities and other resources for educators working with K-12 students in and out of school time including prototyping activities with the appropriate audience.

Collaborate with other Tech Departments and outside partners on the creation and adaptation of educational resources.

Create and deliver customized professional development for schools, school districts and other youth serving organizations locally, nationally and internationally with the support of The Bowers Institute team.

Create online professional development courses in design challenge learning.

Serve as an expert in the Tech’s Design Challenge Learning approach.

Travel to national and international locations as part of a team representing The Tech to deliver The Tech’s education pedagogy including professional development, lessons and activities.

Participate in staff, department, planning and project meetings.

Support Development Department’s fundraising efforts with program and assets descriptions.

Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

Minimum 3 years of experience developing and delivering professional development for educators K-12 in engineering or STEM. (Working with educators in both formal and informal settings a plus.)

Minimum 5 years of experience teaching diverse student populations in grades K-12 in one or more of the following: formal classroom, museum/science center or afterschool program.

Ability to advocate for The Tech’s Mission and its education pedagogy.
