Product Owner - remote

Illuminate Education - Remote - Full time

As a Product Owner, you will be joining our product team while working closely with UI/UX Designers, Engineering, QA, and other teams to drive and lead incredible user experiences in the DnA product.

You will be responsible for planning, development, and direction of business/functional requirements and design of our software platform and integration with other Illuminate products and external education systems to create positive outcomes for educators and students. You will write user stories, manage the backlog and project plans, and provide overall leadership and management of our usability and technical requirements and acceptance criteria.

You should possess exceptional skills around gathering requirements and finely tuning a feature or enhancement to meet the customer’s needs. You must be able to take a feature or enhancement through the software development lifecycle with minimal oversight while ensuring all stakeholders are appropriately involved. Strong team dynamics and interpersonal skills are critical to success in this role, with a strong emphasis on agile practices within small teams. Overall, this role is part of a team, holding substantial feature design and product leadership opportunities and responsibilities.

Here’s what you’ll be responsible for

  • Become an expert on the DnA application, platform and assessment measures.
  • Serve as a communication hub and strategic guide to all stakeholders involved with the product.
  • Help lead and implement PO best practices amongst other Product Owners to grow the Product Owner role in Illuminate.
  • Gather feedback from stakeholders by presenting to and surveying stakeholders throughout the software development life cycle.
  • Escalate issues by working with our customer facing teams to understand and communicate impact on our customers. Prioritize and communicate updates on the highest priority escalations.
  • Work closely with Product Management to align priorities with the product roadmap and business needs.
  • Create well written user stories and help improve existing user stories by providing context on the user persona and problem being solved.
  • Present feature requirements, design, and stories to architects and engineers through story grooming and planning sessions.
  • Work closely with the engineering team to ensure a timely solution according to the specifications, project plans, and significant business needs.
  • Handle complex issues and discrepancies of opinion among stakeholders to negotiate resolution and priority.
  • Develop and maintain a repository of product documentation to be shared with the stakeholder community, including requirements documentation, use cases, UI mock-ups, test cases, requirements traceability matrix, etc.
  • Participate in the daily standups and retrospectives. Lead sprint reviews, sprint planning, and backlog grooming sessions.
  • Maintain and promote excellent communications within the Agile teams and with the Product Management team.
  • Work cross functionally with other Product Owners and their Agile teams to facilitate communication and planning for projects involving multiple teams.

Here’s what you’ll need

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, communication, computer science or equivalent technical and work experience
  • 3+ years work experience as a Business Analyst or Product Owner
  • Experience with software development projects and methodologies
  • Excellent written, interpersonal, and presentation communication skills to effectively influence and interact with all levels of the organization
  • Attention to detail, good organizational skills, and ability to handle tasks of high complexity
  • Experience and willingness to work with off-shore or distributed teams
  • Must possess strong analytical skills and have the ability to take a large topic and break it into smaller components
  • Independent, self-directed and responsive problem solving and troubleshooting skills
  • Ability to resolve and remove obstacles to a project’s completion
  • Experience translating research and ideas into requirements
  • Ability to facilitate and perform data-driven decision making
  • Proven track record of delivering quality products within aggressive timelines
  • Training and certification as a professional scrum product owner (PSPO) or as a certified scrum product owner (CSPO) or equivalent is desired
  • K-12 market experience and a passion for edTech is a huge plus
  • Working knowledge of Atlassian products
  • A sense of humor and humility

Minimal travel required – may include up to 10% of travel.
