About Family Engagement Lab and FASTalk

Family Engagement Lab ( is an Oakland-based, non-profit whose mission is to help schools ignite the power of families to support learning. Our program, FASTalk (Families and Schools Talk), launched in 2017, is an innovative technology for teachers to send curriculum-aligned text messages to families, in their home language. FASTalk helps all families turn everyday moments into fun learning opportunities. In its first year, FASTalk improved literacy outcomes for participating students in Oakland Unified School District.

Family Engagement Lab is supported by prominent foundations, including the Charles and Helen Schwab Foundation, the Schusterman Family Foundation, and Carnegie Corporation of New York. FASTalk is a NewSchools Ignite Early Learning Challenge winner, and a 2018 winner of the MIT J-PAL North America Education, Technology, and Opportunity Innovation Competition.

Job Description

We are seeking a Product Manager to lead the development of FASTalk by defining product requirements, ensuring successful execution and delivery, and incorporating user feedback to improve the organization’s product strategy.

This position may be based in Louisiana, Oakland, CA, Washington, DC, or other US locations. The position is initially a 20-40 hour/week contract role, but may convert to a full-time employee role later in 2019.


  • To ensure FASTalk is successfully delivered to customers by fall 2019:
    • Prioritize and develop key features needed for FASTalk to support a rapidly growing user base of teachers and families.
    • Manage day-to-day workflow with engineers, by anticipating ambiguities, clarifying requirements, and removing blockers.
    • Maintain expertise on all details of the product features and functionality, communicate to support customer success and sales.
    • Incorporate user feedback into FASTalk design and strategy. Coordinate with FASTalk research, sales, and customer success staff to gather and interpret user feedback.
    • Keep up to date on technology and product trends generally and in education.


  • Experience:
    • 2 or more years successfully managing technology products, preferably in education.
    • 1 or more years working in, or, in partnership with, a K-12 school system serving diverse learners.
    • Demonstrated track record of effectively collaborating with teams across geographic locations.
    • Experience developing products that integrate with Clever (or similar) to support K-12 data integration, and Twilio (or similar) for communication services.
    • A passion or interest in family engagement in education.
  • Skills Required:
    • 2-4 years of Product Management experience or technical leadership role
    • Honed process for identifying and testing assumptions about product users
    • High attention to detail
    • Clear and persuasive oral and written communication skills
    • Dependability, including an ability to effectively meet and exceed deadlines
    • Adaptability and ability to respond to changing demands
    • Data analysis skills using Google Suite and Microsoft Office
