Product Designer

Avela Education - Multiple Locations or Remote - Full time

We are on a mission to advance equity in education.

Avela Education provides software to empower high performing districts to support parents and make data-driven decisions that put equity and accountability at the forefront. Our software is built on Nobel Prize winning algorithms by renowned MIT professors.

We recently raised a pre-seed round from Eric Schmidt’s fund and are launching several pilots across the country - and we need your help!

Team

We are a passionate team of entrepreneurs, engineers, economists, and data scientists. We were founded by Parag Pathak, Josh Angrist, and Greg Bybee, who share a vision for public education to prioritize equity, accountability, and quality.

Parag and Josh are education and labor economists who have worked with school districts in New York, Boston, Chicago, New Orleans, Denver, and more. Greg is a social entrepreneur and education activist in Silicon Valley who previously founded PoliScribe and worked at NovoEd, Coursera, NewSchools Venture Fund, and McKinsey.

Role Description

We’re looking for a teammate who’s excited to design exceptional software to help school districts solve their enrollment and admissions challenges. Today, most school districts assign students to “neighborhood schools” based on their zip code. But this inequitable process disempowers families and results in schools that mirror the segregation and socioeconomic status of our neighborhoods. Together, we’ll work with districts to provide a more equitable approach.

As our first Product Designer, you’ll help crystalize our product-market fit and design our products from end-to-end, including user research, user experience design, interface design, and product management.

You will be one of our first teammates and so will be involved in many areas of the business, including product management, UI/UX design, operations, sales, marketing, customer service - you name it, you’ll help with it. This role is a good fit for a customer centric product designer and entrepreneur who loves ambiguity and wants to solve problems in education.

Responsibilities

  • Product Vision - You’ll partner across the team and with our clients to identify the right solutions and products to build. You’ll lead us to quickly test hypotheses with prototypes and minimum viable products (MVPs), and constantly iterate on our SAAS products.
  • Product Management - You’ll identify the customer needs and product requirements and guide the product development process through completion. You’ll determine the features and functionality, triage tickets, and ship delightful products. You’ll decide if we need both a desktop/web application and mobile app, or just a single responsive web app. (In the future, we’ll hire a dedicated product manager, but early in our lifecycle, we’ll need you to wear both hats.)
  • Product Design - You’ll design the product, including the user experience (UX) and the interface (UI) for both the web and mobile experience. You’re responsible for ensuring a delightful user experience that solves their problems and delivers on our promise. You’ll need to ensure the product is intuitive and easy to use to minimize customer support requirements.
  • Marketing Design - As our only designer, you’ll help across the team with visual elements, including basic graphic design, iconography, and branding. You might also help with collateral design and layout, marketing website design, keynote presentation design, and more.
  • Operations, Customer Success, and More - As a growing startup, we need help across the board, from HR to finance to operations. Everyone pitches in to “take out the trash,” and nothing is “outside your job description.” You’ll no doubt help with just about everything early on as we are a small team without dedicated individuals in most roles yet.

Role Qualifications:

  • 5+ years as a senior product designer working on web applications (SAAS)
  • Extensive portfolio of designed and shipped products
  • Design thinking and human centered design expertise
  • Expertise in product mockup, wireframing, and rapid prototyping tools, such as Sketch, Balsamiq, Invision, Axure, Balsamiq, Marvel, Figma, etc.
  • Expertise in mapping user experiences in tools such as FlowMapp.
  • Expertise in designing pixel-perfect mockups in Adobe, Sketch, etc.
  • Front-end web development experience is helpful, but not required
  • Graphic design and illustration experience is helpful, but not required

Team Qualifications:

  • Customer-centric mindset
  • Entrepreneurial spirit and drive
  • Extraordinary comfort with ambiguity
  • Enjoyment wearing many hats
  • Passion for education, equity, or social impact
  • Legal ability to work in the US, based in the USA.
  • Startup experience is preferred/helpful, but not required
  • Among the best at what you do
  • Growth mindset and desire to constantly improve your skills

Benefits

  • Competitive salary.
  • Significant equity stake as a very early employee.
  • Sales bonus / commission plan.
  • Flexible time off policy with no defined limits, plus all major holidays and encouraged vacations.
  • Full health benefits. (We cover platinum level medical at 100%, and platinum dental and vision at 80%.)
  • We will be setting up 401(k) and other retirement programs in the near future.
  • Flexible work policies.
  • Your choice of top-of-the-line technology.
  • Passionate, people-first company culture.

Location

  • Flexible, remote-friendly culture.
  • Remote until at least March 2021 and until Coronavirus is resolved.
  • Our sales/BD team will likely be spread throughout the country, however it might be beneficial to have our first BD leader in San Francisco for rapid iteration and constant collaboration, but we are open to discussing the best approach.
