Encyclopædia Britannica is seeking a Product Design Director to lead the Institutional UX and Design team as we expand the scope and value of our products to better serve the K-12 market. This role will lead that team in the definition, refinement, and documentation of emerging instructional products currently in flight. This person would also be responsible for the maintenance and iterative enhancement of existing reference products that serve millions of K-12 students a day.

The Product Design Director is a team builder, consensus maker, and brand ambassador. Location: Onsite, Chicago, IL (Relocation options available for the right candidate)

Primary Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and mentorship for the digital product design team
  • Lead the work of a multi-disciplinary design as they collaborate with product managers, developers, curriculum specialists, and content editors
  • Work with user experience/user interface designers to translate research findings and business goals into designs that create engaging learning tools for teachers and students.
  • Find and hire the best talent to comprise a complementary set of thinkers who continually push one another to achieve great results
  • Manage execution of multiple projects concurrently
  • Apply and further develop your experience in developing new approaches to design tailored to the mission at hand, including agile and lean product development methodologies
  • Adapt and drive best practices to improve efficiency of the design team
  • Establish and communicate effective design processes combining user-centered design techniques with practical experience in cross-function team collaboration
  • Engage in design community activities to further promote awareness of the product design team and its achievements
  • Lead the direction of the design system, including visual style, UI components, and UX patterns

Required Skills

  • Post-secondary degree (Bachelors or Masters level) in HCI, Human Factors, or related field and 10 years user experience design or related field
  • A portfolio of work demonstrating experience creating human-centered design solutions and showing your ability to turn ideas into a strong and differentiated vision.
  • Candidate should have a minimum 2-3 years of experience working in the K12 education space.
  • Proven ability to merge design-thinking principles with curriculum development and the application of emerging technologies to help tailor content to student behaviors and preferences.
  • Experienced with translating abstract pedagogical concepts into teacher and student-friendly visual interactions.
  • Ability to grasp, interpret and articulate complex learning strategies and industry standard curriculum frameworks. Familiarity with frameworks such as C3 (College, Career, and Civic Life (C3) Framework for Social Studies) Common Core, NGSS, and/or Bloom’s Taxonomy a definite plus.
  • Well versed in instructional design principles, learning tools and features (e.g. rubrics, online discussion, simulations, etc.) and their expected impact on learning based on empirical research.
  • Ability to run focus group discussions, as well as ideation and brainstorming sessions.
  • Strong grasp of HTML & CSS, brownie points for your ability to hand code HTML/CSS and JavaScript.
  • Strong experience with creating user stories, doing research, and creating user personas.
  • Minimum of 2 years of supervisory experience.
