Homeschool Family with 5 Kids - Sonoma, California - Full time

Full Time Private Educator for Five Children in Sonoma, California

We are seeking a dynamic and energetic private tutor to join our family and provide enriching instruction for five wonderful children, ages 5,5,7,9,11. Our primary goals for our children are to be fulfilled, well-adjusted, curious life-long learners who are exceptionally close to one another and have the time/space/bravery/agency to pursue their individual passions.

We are looking for a teacher who is willing to teach in-person at our home in Sonoma, California. This is a unique opportunity to nurture the individual talents and academic development of a small group of learners in a warm and supportive environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement engaging curriculums: You will have the flexibility to either follow existing curriculum (as jointly agreed upon with our family) or create your own, tailored to the specific needs and interests of each child. We encourage you to follow the kids interests and give them agency and choice in their education. We value hands-on/project-based learning as well as progressive, whole-child education. We hope our children will learn to analyze and solve problems rather than simply memorize facts.
  • Deliver engaging lessons: Facilitate dynamic lessons across various subjects, fostering a love of learning and understanding key concepts. This will mainly focus on core subjects like reading, writing, math, history and science, as the kids participate in programs outside the home for enrichment activities like music and art. Our older children also participate in some online courses in science, and we value the fluidity in focusing more or less on certain subjects depending on what they are studying outside the home.
  • Individualize instruction: Pay close attention to each child's strengths and challenges, adapting your teaching approach to personalize their learning journey.
  • Monitor progress and provide feedback: Regularly assess learning, provide constructive feedback, and celebrate achievements to keep students motivated. Provide end of week reports on the children’s activities and manage once yearly standardized tests for benchmarking. Children should all be at least at their respective grade levels according to age, but more likely well ahead.
  • Maintain open communication: Collaborate effectively with parents to discuss student progress, address concerns, and ensure alignment with overall educational goals.
  • Create a positive and encouraging learning environment: Build strong relationships with the children, fostering a climate of curiosity, respect, and fun.

Qualifications:

  • Proven experience as a teacher or tutor, preferably with experience working with children of varying ages and across subjects.
  • Strong understanding of child development and learning theories, ideally with experience working with gifted kids
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to connect with children and parents of different backgrounds.
  • Creativity and resourcefulness in developing engaging learning materials and activities.
  • Ability to plan and manage schedules effectively within a flexible structure.
  • A positive attitude and genuine passion for fostering a love of learning.

Dream Bonus Attributes (none required, but would love to have!) :

  • Nature lover
  • French speaker
  • Someone who shares any of the kids’ passions! - engineer, robotics enthusiast, ballet dancer, horseback rider, snowboarder, astronomist, etc!
  • A couple, who can teach together as a team or friends who could teach together as a team , either dividing the responsibilities by subject matter (STEM versus reading/writing/history) or by age (younger kids versus older kids). In this model, the school day would likely be reduced to 4 hours.

Additional Information:

  • Full-time position (Monday-Friday), 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM. Days will be broken up into half days with the older kids and half days with the younger kids. Hours and days may change throughout the year depending on kids activities. Flexibility needed.
  • Competitive salary and benefits.
  • Opportunity to work in a supportive and enriching environment with a group of kids who love to learn. While we use technology for education, we believe nature is the antidote. We hope to find someone who also loves the outdoors and encourages our kids to get outside, move their bodies, and experience things for themselves. Our children have very limited screen time outside of school.
  • Opportunity to spend 1-2 years working in Sonoma, California. Sonoma is only 50 min north of San Francisco and is the heart of the food and wine culture in California.
  • We like to learn year round. The kids participate in summer camps, so there is much more time off in the summer than other times of year, but we hope to have someone that can either work part time in the summer or provide lesson planning to avoid the summer slide. We live in Tahoe in the summer, and there is also opportunity to come with us , with housing provided. The willingness to be fluid and flexible as the children’s activities shift is critical.

If you are an enthusiastic educator who thrives in a dynamic and rewarding environment, we encourage you to apply! Please submit your resume and a cover letter explaining your interest and qualifications.

We look forward to hearing from you!
