  • A Principal in Residence (PIR) will spend at least one academic year in training at Libertas Academy with extensive immersive experiences where the PIR will have real school leadership responsibilities in order to develop into a highly effective school leader. The goal of the residency year is to successfully prepare the PIR to become the instructional leader of the middle school.

Duties and Responsibilities

Since the objective of the Principal in Residence program is to prepare an individual to be a school leader, individual activities will vary based on an individual growth plan. The growth plan is developed from a skill and values-based evaluation that assesses individual priority growth areas.

Role Expertise

  • Vision Setting: Lead team building sessions and professional development programs for educators and staff to support the fulfillment of the school’s mission and academic objectives

Team Leadership

  • Student Expectations and Routines: Revise behavior management system to foster consistency in academic and behavioral expectations in and out of class
  • Joyful Learning Environment: Establish and lead a ‘Student Joy’ committee dedicated to creating a joyful, achievement-oriented school culture
  • Team and Leadership Development: Coach teachers, Deans of Curriculum and Instruction, and Deans of Students to improve role-performance and student outcomes

Community Building

  • Family Engagement: Lead family meetings over the course of the school year and build partnerships with individual families to support student success

Individual and Collective Excellence

  • Presence: Lead staff orientation sessions on how to welcome scholars at the start of each school day
  • Achievement Orientation: Lead the implementation of an effective, efficient and action-oriented data analysis and action planning process that ensures individual student and whole-class learning needs are met after each interim assessment cycle.
  • Do whatever it takes to ensure that the mission of the school is fulfilled


  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree required
  • Preferred skills and work experience:
  • oExperience working in education organizations
  • oDemonstrates persistence in overcoming and removing obstacles to goal achievement
  • oDemonstrates a drive, commitment and sense of urgency that inspires others to achieve results and is able to hold others accountable for these results
  • oDemonstrated success working with students in traditionally underserved communities
  • oDemonstrated ability in management and presentation
  • oDemonstrated ability in coaching and managing adults
  • oProven ability to plan and executed professional development
  • oPrior leadership roles with demonstrated strong results
  • oExhibited leadership in working with professional staff and students
  • oPrior experience working in urban school setting
  • oProactively approaches others with a view to engaging in dialogue and building strong working relationships
  • oRecognizes and values the input of others
  • oDemonstrates good judgment; approachable and professional; solid problem solving skills; self-motivated; well organized
