Policy Analyst

PIE Network - Remote - Full time

JOB DESCRIPTION:Position

This is a great opportunity for an individual with experience in advocacy, policy, and politics to leverage their professional experience and skills to support leaders across the country as they work to improve educational opportunities for every student. The ideal candidate will be an innovative, strategic, and service-oriented individual, an excellent communicator and connector who is ready to join a collaborative, hard-working team to support a national network of mission-driven organizations.

Reporting to the Vice President, Policy and Program the ideal candidate will possess a strong track record of excellent policy analysis, research, and writing skills, boundless energy, creativity, and optimism, a great sense of humor, a strong passion for the Network’s mission, and a high tolerance for the ever-evolving nature of advocacy efforts. This person must be an action- and service-oriented individual, a natural “connector,” and a strong communicator.

All PIE Network team members work remotely, so the right person with this role must be a self-starter who is comfortable managing and working via virtual platforms.

Organization

PIE Network is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to connect, support, and promote a network of education advocacy organizations working to improve K-12 education in their states so that every child graduates world-ready. A growing organization, the Network currently includes 103 member organizations working in 32 states and the District of Columbia, and 28 national advocacy partners. The Network’s members are nonpartisan in ideas and bipartisan in approach, providing a consistent, evidence-based, and credible public voice in the process of education policymaking. While members of PIE Network may not always agree on issues unique to their states, they share a common commitment to beliefs that define reform and core values that define Network culture.

If this sounds like you…

  • People often tell you that you’re a great listener and you somehow knew what they needed before they did. You get a lot of satisfaction from helping someone else succeed.
  • You are a service-oriented leader and natural “connector” who enjoys leveraging your knowledge and experience to help Network leaders directly and to help the team deliver excellent support, programs, and experiences for Network members.
  • You are insatiably curious about effective campaign strategy and smart tactics and love to discuss the “secret sauce” that led to a big win for friends or foes alike.
  • You seek opportunities to continuously learn and improve.
  • You thrive in rapidly evolving environments that require innovation and agility and are able to use your planning and management skills to create clarity and direction for the team you manage.
  • You keenly observe fields, identify trends and look around corners to anticipate challenges and opportunities.
  • You know how to ensure rapid, effective transfer of knowledge across teams.
  • You are action-oriented and enjoy working as part of a small, “all-hands-on-deck” team.
  • You are a passionate champion of improving education for all children and are comfortable with the dissension that sometimes accompanies efforts to help deliver on that promise.

…then you might want to work to build a growing Network!

Responsibilities

  • Plan and Host high-leverage virtual and in-person learning opportunities for PIE Network partners and members to accelerate the dissemination of lessons learned, explore differing points of view, and respond to membership needs.
  • Analyze emerging research and policy developments related to the PIE Network’s policy pillars, which include high expectations, innovative options, great educators, and responsive systems.
  • Build and Administer annual member surveys.
  • Track state and federal legislation and policy developments to anticipate opportunities and threats for PIE Network members and partners.
  • Support the building of smaller “hubs” – communities of practice and leaders’ councils – within the Network to preserve and strengthen member connections and learning as the Network grows.
  • Provide members with timely, relevant tools, and resources to support their work.
  • Connect with advocates, policy advocates, policy thinkers, and other education innovators, making connections and sharing resources between them that drive policy innovations across state lines.
  • Communicate effectively, via writing and speaking, with Network staff, members, advisors, and partners.
  • Develop case studies, field guides, and resources that elevate advocacy best practices and successful strategy outcomes.
  • Support the Network team as needed on strategic initiatives.

Ideal Qualifications

All candidates should have experience in a leadership role in advocacy or education policy. Demonstrable experience and other qualifications include:

  • At least three years of professional experience in advocacy, policy, or research-related role.
  • Excellent writer and demystifier of wonky, complex information.
  • Problem solver that is willing to take creative risks and propose innovative solutions.
  • Deep commitment to amplifying diverse viewpoints and diverse leaders.
  • Direct communicator comfortable managing up and across the team with excellent project management skills and an entrepreneurial mindset.
  • Responsiveness and adaptability to a “network” culture with changing priorities and political challenges.
  • A self-starter who is comfortable working on virtual platforms, given that the PIE Network works remotely and supports advocates across the country.
  • Ability to travel to Network events and engage in events hosted by key partners (roughly 20-25% of the year).
  • A college degree; master’s degree a plus.

Location: Virtual, US-based.

Benefits include generous paid time off. Compensation is commensurate with experience.
