The Role & Responsibilities

The Part-Time Debate Teacher will teach two different 40-minute courses that each meet twice a week from 8:16 – 8:56. One course (Introduction to Policy Debate) will meet Tuesday and Thursday and the second course (Advanced Policy Debate) will meet Wednesday and Friday. Classes will range from 10 – 15 students. The teacher will be required to be on site by 8:00am. The Teacher would also need to be available for after school practices which are typically held Wed/Fri from 3:45-5:00pm. The Teacher will be responsible for curriculum development and behavior management for his/her course and will receive supervision and feedback from the Dean of Students and Director of Operations.

Each class will be 40 minutes, and teachers will be compensated for 50 minutes of planning time for each course; thereby receiving 3 hours of pay weekly for each course taught. Compensation is $30 - $50 an hour (includes any tournament hours) commensurate with experience. We anticipate 15-20 hours a week.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • In collaboration with the school’s debate coach, create and implement a curriculum designed to introduce new students to policy debate and prepare returning students for varsity level tournaments.
  • Select, organize, and distribute a schedule of tournaments. This involves responding to or soliciting invitations to tournaments, creation of a competition calendar, and completion of registration information.
  • Attend the Boston Debate League’s summer graduate coaching course (Dates TBD)
  • Provides individual and group instruction in preparation for tournament competition, including organizing practice rounds.
  • Help build a positive culture among team members at all levels.
  • Help arrange transportation, lodging, meals and other logistics for debate tournaments.
  • Meet with the school’s Director of Operations/Debate Co-Coach to review annual team goals.
  • Support students in selecting, applying for, and preparing for summer debate camps/institutes.
  • Judge at regional tournaments or help secure debate judges for tournaments, as needed.
  • Ensures the safety of students by adhering to both team and general school rules and regulations while at debate tournaments.

The start date is August 2018.

Requirements

  • Extensive experience with policy debate as either a previous policy debater or coach
  • Experience working with middle or high school students highly preferred
  • Experience working with students of color in urban educational environments preferred
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with students, parents, and colleagues
  • Commitment to ensuring all students receive a meaningful and challenging academic experience
  • Available to work some weekends (i.e.debate tournaments)
  • Shared dedication to Brooke’s mission and organizational values
  • Ability to embrace feedback and modify instruction based on feedback
  • Excellent teamwork, communication, initiative, urgency, and positivity
  • Strong attendance and commitment to the debate class and success of the debate team.
  • Experience with online team management tools (Tabroom, MyDebateTeam, Google Classroom, etc.)
