Founded in 1989, Benetech (www.benetech.org) is a nonprofit that develops and uses technology to create positive social change. In 2002, Benetech launched Bookshare (www.bookshare.org), which is now the world's largest library of copyrighted e-books for people with disabilities that affect their use of traditional print, such as blindness, visual impairment, and severe dyslexia.

Benetech received an award to provide training and outreach on accessible materials to blind and visually impaired adults in the New York City metro area. Under the direction of Benetech staff, this motivated Outreach Coordinator will help these individuals gain a broader understanding of the availability and benefits of accessible materials and will help educate them in how to obtain and use accessible e-books. The Outreach Coordinator is an independent contractor working 20-35 hrs/week. This position is based in New York. No relocation assistance is available.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Act as Bookshare’s local representative in the New York City metro area.
  • Partner with organizations supporting adult (18-65 yrs old) blind/visually impaired individuals
  • Schedule and deliver training on accessible e-books and Bookshare to partner organizations
  • Represent Bookshare at conferences and other events
  • Do regular outreach to encourage B/VI adults to sign up for Bookshare
  • Provide bi-weekly and monthly reports of your efforts to Benetech staff on a timely basis

Qualifications

  • 3-5 years' experience working with special needs individuals
  • Working knowledge of assistive technologies and accessible materials, especially those used by individuals with print disabilities
  • Proven experience delivering informative and engaging face-to-face presentations to large groups
  • Proven experience leading effective hands-on lab workshops and online webinars
  • Ability to work well with organizations and programs serving people who are blind/visually impaired
  • Ability to travel on a weekly basis if needed, to communities within 60 miles of Manhattan.
