Movement Schools is a rapidly growing network of K-8 public charter schools in Charlotte, North Carolina. Movement builds amazing schools available to all students that emphasize academics and virtue, and believe in the inherent value and dignity of all children.

Movement’s first campus opened in West Charlotte in 2017. The school now serves 500 students and will grow to serve nearly 800. Movement’s second campus will open later this year in East Charlotte. Over the next decade, Movement plans to grow to serve 10+ schools in Charlotte, serving around 10,000 students.

Each Movement School will open as part of a larger, holistic investment focused on building neighborhoods and communities where children and families thrive. These broader investments include affordable housing, houses of worship, early-childhood education, faith-based and secular after-school programing, medical clinics and wellness centers, and community co-working spaces.

OPPORTUNITY

The Chief Academic Officer (CAO) will be responsible for the academic success of Movement Schools by overseeing the academic and instructional programs for Movement's growing Charlotte network. The CAO will hire, manage, and lead professional development for Movement’s Charlotte area principals. Additionally, the CAO will play a key role in developing the academic model for the Charlotte network, and laying the foundation for subsequent Movement regions as the organization continues to grow its impact.

The ideal candidate for Movement’s Chief Academic Officer will be:

  • An experienced Principal leader who can comfortably step into the role of leading two Principals overseeing elementary schools, that will grow to serve students in grades K-8. This includes all aspects of team development for both direct reports and those under their leadership;
  • An entrepreneurial leader and systems thinker who will directly influence the long-term planning and overall academic design of Movement Charlotte Schools. This individual will craft and align supporting programs such as the performance management process, professional development programs, and staffing structure to ensure that everyone is accountable for and fully equipped to achieve success.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Key Responsibilities of the Chief Academic Officer include:

  • Leading the development and implementation of a rigorous and aligned curriculum, instructional tools, systems, and practices that lead to college and career readiness for all Movement students;
  • Developing a comprehensive academic improvement plan to address academic challenges and deficiencies and support school leaders in the implementation of this plan;
  • Regularly reviewing data to ensure that all schools are on track to meet performance goals, identifying potential challenges, and working with principals to develop clear action plans for addressing these areas;
  • Guiding executive staff, principals, supervisors, teachers, and other staff in the development of instructional systems that encourage rigorous, developmentally appropriate, and culturally relevant academic learning across all content areas for students, including curriculum in all grades and subjects, interim and summative assessments, scope and sequence, intervention programs, and other instructional tools;
  • Building and supporting a high performing educational team by inspiring, integrating and aligning the academic work of the schools, and developing and maintaining clear and inclusive decision-making processes;
  • Allocating resources to ensure academic goals are achieved;
  • Supporting the professional development of school leaders, teachers, and staff in academic standards utilizing best-in-class adult learning methods that engage staff and pursue excellent outcomes for students;
  • Supporting the development of tools and communications to parents and other community partners that enhance learning outside of school hours;
  • Communicating and disseminating the details of the current and future instructional programs to the administration, board, staff, parents, and public to build parent and community participation in advancing the goals of Movement Schools;
  • Ensuring a school-wide culture that sustains positive learning environments, engages families, and builds character among all students;
  • Partnering with the Executive Director to assure that all schools have the operational support they need for success, and develop recruitment and retention procedures to ensure well-qualified applicants for instructional positions;
  • Leading interactions with the State and other external stakeholders and constituencies on matters of academics, instruction, and assessment;
  • Engaging in strategic planning, budgeting, and short and long-term planning processes for board approval.

QUALIFICATIONS

In order to fulfill these responsibilities, the ideal Chief Academic Officer candidate will have:

  • Demonstrated commitment to the values and vision of Movement Schools;
  • A highly successful teaching background at the K-8 level, with a record of leading their students to high academic achievement;
  • A Bachelor’s degree;
  • Preferably experience teaching or leading in at a high-performing charter school or charter school network.
