About the PositionDigital Promise Global is seeking a research scientist to work closely with Dr. Jeremy Roschelle and other team members on research projects regarding effective use of technology in mathematics learning. The projects will mostly serves students from late elementary school through high school and in low-income or underserved settings. In one example, research examines how coaches and teachers in low-income schools can integrate dynamic visual representations and mathematical argumentation into their classrooms. This project also uses practical measures to guide improvement across settings. In another example, research would develop and validate measurements of game-based learning, particularly with regard to developing students’ conceptual understanding and preparing students to learn important and challenging topics later on. Another project synthesizes research to guide innovators in addressing and measuring equity goals in their mathematics program. An additional area of interest is integration of computational thinking and mathematics.

The research scientist will be a member of the Learning Sciences Research group. The group proposes and conducts learning science research projects in partnership with other Digital Promise and Digital Promise Global teams and networks of schools. The Learning Sciences group regularly works together across projects to advance learning research that promotes ethical, effective, and equitable outcomes at scale. We value working in partnership with educators, taking an improvement orientation, using technology add meaning and value to learning experiences, emphasizing the potential for deep and lasting impacts from research, and communicating research effectively.


  • Lead research tasks with an understanding of the larger project context, including giving direction to others as needed.
  • Apply knowledge of qualitative and quantitative social science methods to plan data collection, specification and analysis, develop findings and insights, and to recommend improvements to programs and methods.
  • Understand and contribute to progress on diversity, equity and inclusion goals within projects and in the research group
  • Work effectively with teachers and students; conduct interviews, observations, collect data
  • Contribute in meetings with partners and funders
  • Author well-structured, clear and concise research reports
  • Write sections of proposals that describe how research tasks would be conducted to generate sound and useful knowledge, or other necessary proposal elements
  • Participate in an appropriate professional community, outside of Digital Promise
  • Communicate about research to relevant audiences, in both informal and professional venues


  • Doctorate in learning sciences, mathematics education, curriculum & instruction, educational assessment or a related field with strong research emphasis. Master's Degree with 10+ years of research experience will also be considered.
  • Experience in all phases of mixed methods research (qualitative and quantitative) in mathematics education
  • Experience either in (a) developing or validating assessments or (b) in developing and studying instructional tasks for teachers or students.
  • Experience working with underserved students or in diverse settings
  • Expertise in research on teacher and student learning of mathematics in upper elementary, middle school, or early high school
  • Familiarity with research on effective technology use in mathematics education required.
  • Familiarity or experience with Research-Practice Partnerships with school districts desired.
  • Familiarity with improving implementation in a school district setting desired.
  • Strong writing skills, evidenced by writing samples
  • Strong oral communication skills
  • Ability to travel as need to research sites.
