Math Instructional Content Specialist

About the Role

New Classrooms’ mission is to personalize the classroom every day for every student. In Teach to One: Math, one of our design tenets that allows us to strive towards this mission is providing multiple integrated approaches to learning, which we call learning modalities. Students learn mathematical skills and concepts in a variety of settings - with a teacher, independently or collaboratively with other students - with a variety of different types of instructional content materials.

In this role, you will help design, curate and advance Teach to One: Math’s instructional content to be used by teachers in our partner schools. Backed by leading research and pedagogy in instructional design, you will play an integral part in developing lesson and project materials that inspire a deep understanding of mathematics and fit within a non-traditional classroom model.

What You Would Do

  • Design innovative mathematical investigative and exploratory materials for grades 2-9 for use in New Classrooms programs
  • Research and find new methods for creating lesson and project materials
  • Manage a team of content writers (on-boarding, developing, providing feedback) to ensure the quality of content being delivered to students is consistently high
  • Collaborate with team members to design and deliver professional development for math content writers
  • Curate high quality math content from third party vendors (both in the print and digital realm)
  • Assist in the analysis of our mathematical skill map to identify (i) updates to relationships and (ii) new skills that we should create in order to be better aligned to Common Core State Standards

What We Are Looking For

  • Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s Degree in education, curriculum design, or related field preferred
  • At least 3 years of classroom teaching experience in math, grades 4-9
  • Deep understanding of standards-based middle school math curriculum knowledge across multiple grades, preferably Common Core State Standards
  • Experience planning and teaching investigative, exploratory lessons and projects
  • Experience writing and/or reviewing K-12 math curriculum materials
  • Familiarity with Math Solutions and NCTM resources
  • Familiarity with Making Thinking Visible and Thinking Routines resources
  • Familiarity with pedagogy from leading math education experts such as Jo Boaler, Dan Meyer, and Kathy Williams
  • Ability to think deeply about math concepts beyond computational activities
  • An understanding that there is more to mathematics than just finding the “right” answer
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to handle multiple time-sensitive tasks simultaneously
  • Belief in the importance and benefit of feedback and ability to provide and act on feedback in an effective and efficient manner
  • Comfort working in a highly collaborative, fast-paced work environment w/ an ability to learn quickly and act on your feet
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
