Marketing Director, Education

Position Summary Through our newly released EdTech products and our in-person and online engagement, KQED provides educators and young people multimedia content, experiential activities, and professional tools. We help educators to create learning environments of the 21st century by promoting civic engagement, creative expression, and problem solving using digital media.

Our new EdTech products are built on our reputation as a trusted content provider, our commitment Open Educational Resource (OER) distribution, and our expertise in media literacy.

The Marketing Director, Education, will design and lead initiatives and manage a team devoted to developing and deepening our relationships with the professional educator audience as well as build awareness of KQED’s educational service within the Bay Area, California, and US education market. This position develops and executes the strategy for all marketing, communications, outreach and engagement for KQED's educational service, including email, social media, promotion, events and conferences, ambassador program, and more, to deepen connections with our audience. In conjunction with the Managing Director, Education, and reporting to the Executive Director, Education, this leadership position will be responsible for the implementation strategy for growing KQED’s reach, engagement and impact in education.

 Essential Functions

  1. Develop and execute comprehensive marketing strategies for growth and engagement across KQED’s educational service aimed at increasing KQED’s brand recognition and product adoption rate, including a three-fold increase in registered users of KQED Teach by 2020.
  2. Manage and lead the marketing and engagement team, including: Engagement Specialist, Marketing Specialist and department intern.
  3. Establish practices and create workflows to grow marketing pipeline, maximize promotion, audience development and engagement efforts including in-person, online and social engagement specific to the education market.
  4. Create and execute plan to grow educator awareness and engagement via social media platforms.
  5. Direct effective promotional campaigns with the goal of engaging our audiences including a variety of digital and in-person marketing tactics, email, online advertising, events, and other promotional activities. Analyze campaigns and projects based on key metrics, updating dashboards, and communicating back to the broader team.
  6. Direct newsletter strategy and testing to optimize traffic. Oversee a comprehensive promotion plan for subscription growth and click-thru optimization.
  7. Direct events strategy. Develop promotional plans for maximizing audience engagement around high priority events with public media partners and community partners.
  8. Oversee Teacher Ambassador program and management of conference outreach strategy.
  9. Define key value propositions that will translate into marketing and communications materials on website, in collateral materials, for presentations and embedded in products.
  10. Work with audience development, audience engagement and product teams to scale marketing-related capabilities and technology to unleash growth and drive efficiencies.
  11. Manage marketing budget for department in coordination with executive director.
  12. Develop partnerships that drive referral opportunities and cross-promotion of our content to increase deeper engagement.
  13. Spearhead special projects to focus on new and existing audience opportunities with appropriate internal and external stakeholders.
  14. Drive SEO efforts working with product and content teams and external consultants to improve reach and engagement, according to growth targets.
  15. Working closely with the design department, manage the creation of promotional material for conferences, events and products including online advertising, print materials and swag.

Credentials/Education Required:

  • BA required

Knowledge/Experience Required:

  1. 8+ years experience in EdTech marketing, preferably with multimedia Including: user acquisition strategy development and implementation
  2. Demonstrated ability to execute on goals and drive rapid, measurable growth
  3. Proven track record in digital marketing including email newsletter production, list service management, copywriting
  4. Advanced knowledge of social media platforms, engagement strategies and relationship management
  5. Excellent editorial and internal and external communications skills; outstanding representation of KQED in the field
  6. Demonstrated experience in campaign-driven promotion of content, products, events, services to drive audience growth and engagement
  7. Design and execution of in-person engagement initiatives such as trade show/conference exhibiting, ambassador program
  8. 5+ years experience in staff supervision
  9. Demonstrated project management skills
  10. Demonstrated writing and editing ability
  11. Demonstrated budget development and tracking expertise
  12. Tech-savvy: demonstrated ability to apply CRM skills to execute strategy
  13. Self-starter, passionate influencer and team player. Ability and willingness to contribute effectively to the efforts of a high-energy, high performance collaborative team of professionals committed to utilizing the resources of KQED on behalf of the community.
  14. Travel up to five times per year
